One moment he's walking along, holding Edmund's hand and chattering, justifying his Kyle Reese costume for the eighteenth time that night, and then, all of a sudden, everything changes. It's like they walk into a fog and then the're standing in ( Read more... )

He had been looking at the ground. The party had been fun but long and all that Edmund had wanted to focus on, as they walked along the path back home, was Charlie's hand in his and the bed that awaited them. He had not been looking at where they were going and did not think to until the floor sort of changed beneath them, from a dirty boardwalk to something cleaner but draped in a fog.

Frowning, Ed jerked his head upwards and glanced around them warily. His hand tightened just barely around Charlie's, the other cheating towards the hilt of his sword (and now he was certainly glad to have made the more authentic choice with his costume there). "No," he agreed. "But it's not the normal sort of thing, is it?"

"No. It's not."

It's definitely his kitchen; his parent's kitchen, back home. He looks around, taking in everything. Something feels wrong. The shadows are too deep. The house is too quiet. Even when she's sleeping, his Mom plays music. "We've got to find my Mom, Ed."

"This is your home?" he asked quickly. But why else would Charlie think to look for his mother, if it weren't his house? "You think she's here?" It seemed dead quiet, as though not a soul were in the place. Edmund wasn't quite sure they should be looking for anyone or anything but a way out, if one existed.

"Yeah. New York." Charlie looks around and moves towards the far door. "She's always here. Unless she's visiting Dad. She doesn't really go out." He tugs Edmund into a corridor. "Mom? Mom, are you here?"

There's a smile slipping across his face. Maybe this is like when they went to Narnia. Maybe he gets to be home for just a little bit; maybe he gets to bring Edmund with him.
