Free will is doing whatever the fuck you want: Winchesters and eschatology

Warning. No one has read this but me, and the long-suffering kaseido nodded in all of the right places. It's long, but hopefully more comprehensible than not.

Mmmm... nothing like Winchesterian theology to make my Sunday. Now off to write some PORN.

Question concerning free-will v. determinism in the Supernaturlverse:

Does not the simple fact that Sam has visions of the future, and is thus able to change the future, indicate that there is free-will?

Example: Sam has a vision of Dean's future death, and because of this, he is able to stop it. If there is no free-will, then what Sam is seeing is a vision of a false future, which appears to have no purpose other than to bring him to that exact point, at that exact time, to prevent the false future from occuring.

I would argue on the purpose of visions of a false future, except we know that some of Sam's visions do come to pass. So either he is having visions of a possible future in a free-will world, or he is having visions of both real and false futures in a pre-determined world. The reasoning behind the last possibility just makes my head hurt ( ... )

Well... you point out the flaw here. The visions could be false. What Sam sees could be designed to bring him to a particular place to enact certain events. Or, it could be ACK predestination, but lets not go there.

I think the key point is that the fact that Sam has visions doesn't mean that anyone in particular, or even Sam has free will. I do say later in the post the fact that Sam is able to change the visions suggests free will, but I completely elided the issue of the visions being just lies.

But see, I actually do believe there's free will in SPNverse. So, I won't make too strenuous an argument about them. *g*
