What tool do you use to grey out all the areas of a picture except one like in #29?

I coloured the icon the way I usually would, then I made a new layer and filled with black & changed the layer setting from Normal to colour. Then I used the mask tool to take away what i didn't want to be coloured.

Use the mask tool, you can erase alright - but if you mess up you have to start again, with the mask tool you can easily fix it.

For some reason Anderson reminds me of a cat. I'm not sure why.
