horizonssing Day 17:
Red Dragon Shopping Centre “Come on.” Jack called as he threw Ianto’s suit jacket at him.
Ianto tried to catch his jacket as it arched towards him across the hub but it landed half on his shoulder, half on his workstation.
“Oh, where we going?” Gwen perked up as she peered round her workstation to look at Jack who was now grasping Ianto’s hand and pulling him towards the lift.
“You, Gwen Cooper, are staying here while me and Mr. Jones spend five minutes outside of this hub that doesn’t involve chasing aliens.” Jack said, pointing the finger at her as he tugged on Ianto’s hand again.
“You went out on a date last night!” Gwen protested, pulling herself to her feet now as she made to follow them.
“We went out, but we never made it on the date.” Ianto corrected, finally tugging back on Jack so they came to a halt just at the security cage. “We got distracted by the fleet of Weevil’s that decided to rain on our parade.”
“Gwen you get to spend every night,” Jack noticed Ianto’s look. “Ok, most nights with Rhys. Ianto and I barely get any time together that doesn’t involve life threatening situations.”
Jack actually fluttered his eyelashes at her which caused Ianto to roll his eyes.
“Please? Just a couple of hours for lunch?” Jack begged.
“Fine.” Gwen huffed, sitting back down at her desk. “Just don’t switch your phone’s off.”
“I could kiss you.” Jack replied before tugging Ianto the rest of the way into the lift and leaving Gwen with an amused look on her face.
“Where are we going?" Ianto asked as Jack continued to try and tug him across the Plass. Ianto finally freed his hand from Jack’s clutches and came to an abrupt stop next to a group of Japanese tourists that appeared to have a map of Glasgow out.
“Jack, where are we going?” Ianto demanded, slightly short tempered through lack of sleep.
“Ianto, I honestly don’t care as long as I get to spend some time with you away from the world and all it’s problems. I want our problems now, it’s us time.” Jack said forcibly.
“Come on,” Ianto coaxed, putting a hand on Jack’s shoulder and turning him back round so they were facing the road again. “We’ll go to the Red Dragon Centre. And when you say anything?” Ianto’s eyebrow quirked in question.
“You want to go bowling don’t you?” Jack asked with a half sigh.
“You did say anything, and if you’re good I’ll buy you some candy floss.” Ianto teased. Jack’s response was to cuff Ianto lightly round the back of the head, causing him to stumble forward slightly, laughing as he swerved round a young family.
**
“Jack do you ever not cheat at anything?”
“I’m not cheating!” Jack insisted as he wrote down Ianto’s strike on the screen.
“Well you’re either cheating or you’re very dense and don’t know how to score, and there’s only so many times I’ll fall for the latter.” Ianto chuckled as he sat down on one of the plastic seats, picking up the bottle of beer on the table in front of him and leaning back slightly in the seat. Jack smiled as he turned to watch Ianto, his shirt sleeves rolled up and his tie gone from round his neck. He could see it peeking out of the pocket of Ianto’s suit jacket which was lain over the chair beside Ianto, awaiting it’s return to work.
It was nice to just stop in the middle of the day and - did he dare think it - be normal for once. He glanced at the small clock in the top of the screen, noting they had now been gone from the hub for an hour and a half. It was too good to be true though.
“Oh you have got to be kidding me.” Jack groaned as he heard screaming from outside in the shopping centre. He glanced over his shoulder at Ianto who was already pulling himself to his feet and sprinting up the steps to the exit.
Jack followed, grasping at his coat on the way by where his gun was concealed. When he reached the entrance to the bowling alley he found Ianto stood there with his hands in his pockets, laughing heartily at the show before him. Jack peered round him to be met with the sight of what appeared to be half a circus taking up the shopping mall, some of them on stilts while others clowned around the entrance to the cinema, throwing popcorn at each other. The scream had come from a small child who was now crying into his mother’s arms. Ianto sympathised; clowns were terrifying.
“Turns out it was just a man in a mask.” Ianto commented as he turned to go back into the bowling alley. “And he would have got away with it too if it wasn’t for us meddling kids.”
“What?” Jack frowned in confusion as he turned to follow Ianto back into the bowling alley.
“Nothing.” Ianto smiled as his phone chirruped in his pocket, playing the James Bond theme tune. He sighed, fishing it out. It was Gwen. He barely got a word in edgeways before Gwen had hung up again.
“Let me guess, emergency?” Jack sighed as he was already bending down to remove his bowling shoes.
“Avengers assemble.” Ianto commented as he too bent to take his shoes off.
“You need to get out more.” Jack commented as he handed over his shoes.
“I get out plenty, I think that’s part of the problem.”
“So maybe tonight we stay in.” Jack suggested as he tied his laces. “At yours, not the Hub.” Jack added when he saw Ianto’s look. Ianto nodded, smiling slightly before he was shouldering his jacket, slipping his tie round his neck before ushering Jack towards the door.
“Come on Captain Scarlet, Gwen needs us.”
“Seriously Ianto, less television.” Jack mocked, rolling his eyes before he fell instep with Ianto, weaving their way through the circus towards the shopping centre exit.
