This is techy but short. I have to draw a diagram for my report, and I randomly installed a program called Dia. It took most of the pain out of making a simple diagram. I love it! It's turned a task from being stupidly complicated to beautifully simple because all I want to do is use simple and common symbols, and it provides them. I don't have to

Seems there is - check out http://dia-installer.de/index_en.html

Now, bear in mind it doesn't have any specific microbio stuff that I know of, but it does have preset objects for flowcharts and whatnot. Let me know if it's of any use.
