PROF: And you're all too young to have used DOS shell...
SARAH: ...

SARAH: *snort*

I freaking lived in DOS until we got Windows 95. Yeah, we had 3.1 (which he also mentioned as a "before your time" dig), but you couldn't open any of the good games in Windows. Rebel Assault, Mad Dog McCree, Dark Forces (and that's Dark Forces I, before ( Read more... )

I remember Windows 3.11. Why do you think switching to Mac OSX was so easy? :-D

I remember pre-3.11...

I think there must have been a time when we didn't have Windows, but I don't remember it, alas! One more point of geek cred I will never have.

...I do remember that my kindergarten classroom's monitor, much like the LOST terminal, had exactly one color. But that was okay, because the Ninja Turtles were green, and so anything green was okay by me. XD

My parents are computer engineers; we've always had terminals. Hence, I remember computer boxes that were big enough for me to make playhouses out of.

I remember using DOS! Our first computer did - and might still, if it still works - and it had a couple of DOS based games on it, IIRC. I never played any of the Star Wars games, but I did have a couple of Flight Simulators and King's Quest.

Clearly the prof does not know the kind of geeks he is dealing with.

Those Star Wars games defined middle school for me. They're still the only games I've ever actually been good at. XD

I think the game that I played the most was King's Quest - lots of Mythology references there, from Hades to Beauty and the Beast and a whole lot of others.

I also remember those green-screen computers. We had those in like third grade, and I remember writing stories on them, and actually figured out how to use them pretty well. Then came the early Macs, and so on. Gawd, I remember using the internet for the first time. The hiss and crackle of AOL. Those were the days.

Ah, yes...the series of bizarre beeps and squeals of dial-up, how I...don't miss thee at all. :P

Also, I don't know if you've seen this, but there are some hysterical articles in it.

I remember DOS! Vividly! It made UNIX (in one lab, Solaris in another, and then, six months later, Linux everywhere) a little easier at university, and now every time I try to use a Windows command line, I try something like ls -l and wonder why it doesn't work - nevermind some of the trikier things that a *nix shell does.

When people start talking about UNIX and Linux and Solaris and things, I get nervous. These are things my CS major ex-boyfriend would mutter about while scribbling on whiteboards and looking very serious.

In comparison, my computer skills are kind of like this: I can open old-school video games with a DOS prompt! And I can make stuff italic! And bold! And bold AND italic!

Flare jeans are the only style that make my fantastic ghetto booty proportional with the rest of me. Mirrors would probably break if I put on skinny jeans.

...Which, in fact, kind of makes me want to try it.
