Does whatever a spider can...

I really wanted to like the Ulitmate Spiderman.  Really.  I like a lot of the dry throwaway lines.  I like that Doctor Strange looks like Tony Stark with blue eyes and manages to get around dialogue that makes him sound like he's playing Pokemon. (Sword of Abaranthia, I chose you!).  I like Danny's combination ninja/sufer dude attitude.  And I like ( Read more... )

I normally don't have a problem watching shows nominally aimed at kids, but the writers for Ultimate Spider Man apparently think high school aged kids have two modes, and two modes only, ever:

1. Insanely stupid.
2. Toweringly assholish/self centered, up until the last five minutes of the episode where they learn their lesson and get their act together.

I think occasional bouts of that kind of thing do make sense for teenagers, but the show just cakes it on and it's frustrating.

Nick Fury is voiced by Chi McBride, who is always great in annoyed/aggrieved/exasperated mode. You can check him out in the flesh in The Human Target, Undercover Brother, and Pushing Daisies.

Totally agree with your assessment of the writers. And of the two, I can cope with insanely stupid more than toweringly assholish. Unfortunately USM, seems to prefer the later and doesn't seem to be able to tell the difference between "Peter Parker is a smartass" and "Peter Parker is an asshole".

Although I admit my opinion of the show may have been coloured by the seventy-five million ads for those horrible children singing pop song cds that TOON subjected me to.

Chi McBride! I loved him in Pushing Daisies! (haven't seen the other two although a check of his IMDB suggests I've seen him guesting in a number of shows over the years)
