She'd heard all the insults, all the slurs, all the sneered jibes. It was hard enough for any woman to make it as a detective on Boston’s force. But for an out-and-proud lesbian-

Still, she’d never been one to hide who she was just to make life easier on herself, and she wasn’t about to start now. She’d earned that gold shield, damn it, by being smarter, better, than any of her straight, male colleagues, and she wasn’t about to apologize for that.

Which was why she’d follow Pat Bonanno to hell and back. He’d given her a chance, had backed her more times than she cared to remember, had always had her back.

Let the other cops call her “homo” and worse. Hearing Bonanno call her "Detective Grayson" with that unmistakable respect in his voice made it all worthwhile.
