He knew it worried them to see him like this - bruised, bleeding, body hunched into itself and moving slowly, gingerly. It bothered them, hurt them.

He could see it in Nate’s watchfulness, Sophie’s tenderness, Hardison’s forced cheer, and even in Parker’s incessant poking. So long as he was able to snap back, he couldn’t be too badly injured. They hurt because he hurt, and they worried.

He only wished he could tell them not to worry. This was his job. He took the punishment so they wouldn’t have to, and he took it gladly.

Pain was the price he paid for keeping his family safe.
