more than an assignment [ota]

Jan 19, 2011 10:50

What had started out as just another assignment had swiftly taken the turn for something much bigger and possibly much more dangerous. In the space of two months he already had a near death experience under his belt and had it not been for Olivia, he'd probably be on his way to dead. It wasn't something he really wanted to dwell on, but it had ( Read more... )

These days Olivia's life consisted of working out, boredom, books read out of boredom and coffee. Lots of that, actually, so she had spent alsmost as much time in the mess hall as in her room or the gym. Usually she'd get her coffee and her snack and leave again, or find a table as far away from others as possible, but today she spotted a face she hadn't seen since the attack and decided she might as well give in to curiosity.

Drawing out a chair on the opposite side of the table she put down her coffee and, after getting suitably comfortable, looked at Spencer.

"Hey. How are you?"

Looking up, Spencer managed a surprised smile as he closed over his notebook. "Hey," he hadn't really seen much of her, although he heard she'd gone out with the team to help bring back the Captain. "I'm okay, I'm good." He wasn't quiet his usual self, but he was getting there, really.

"How're you? I heard there were some complications with the rescue mission. Everything okay?" Since about a third of the team had ended up in the medical centre, Spencer could only assume that something had gone a little wrong.

But no one was reported dead so that was a plus.

Liv managed to smile back, she knew first hand how it was like to have an injury like that heal so fast-and there were quite a few things she'd rather endure than having to go through that again.

"Better, I'll just have to get used to using my powers more. As for the mission... I'm not an expert on teamplay, but shooting teammates doesn't seem to be the right thing to do. But...we got the Captain and nobody died on our end, I'd say that counts for something. "

Leaning back she took a sip of her coffee and muttered a few curses when she realized that it was still a little too hot.

The was a little shocking really. "Wait, it was someone on the team that shot the kid in the med centre?" Now, Spencer had already deducted that too many personality types like this meant for utter chaos when it came to planning things like missions. The likes of Creed, who Spencer was thankful to have not run into since his arrival, and the likes of Chris, who Spencer rather liked, well, it was only safe to say they really shouldn't have been sent out together at all.

Things were just horribly complicated.

But the fact that someone on the team actually shot a member of their team. That didn't bode well for anyone. "What happened?"

Fresh out of the Med Bay, Haylie had been thrashing about in her bed while her body worked through the pain of her injury. Thankfully, Emma hadn't been around the room which afforded Haylie some privacy but she was getting tired of being cooped up in such a small space. She was by no means claustrophobic, but the building was too crowded for her liking. Almost to the point she'd prefer her old room with the hole in the floor.

And that explained her presence in the mess hall, dressed in jeans and a black t-shirt while trying to balance a tray of food and juice with her free arm. She made her way to Spencer's table and took a seat beside him, glance going to his notebook, and then moving up to his face.

"Boo."

Her arm was in a sling, she'd hardly slept in the Med Bay, and she was starving. All-in-all, she looked like crap. But even so, she gave Spencer the best smile she could muster.

Word had spread out pretty quick about the injuries; the Captain was in need of medical attention, Olivia had been needing rest, someone had been shot, he didn't really realise that anything had happened to Haylie. "Hey, what happened?"

The sling confused him a little, because no one had ever mentioned anything about a broken arm. So how did she do it and why didn't anyone mention it?

Not that Spencer had been asking specific questions. He'd ended up talking to a nurse about the team that had come back in the mess hall a day ago or so. Apparently his assisting Haylie in her break-out before wasn't held against him and the nurse staff still seemed rather friendly.

"I'd say we match now, but mine's a little higher up." Haylie quipped dryly, tilting her head toward the bandages wrapped high up on her arm. She clearly wasn't surprised that anyone failed to mention her injury - and she didn't mind - because the Captain and Pyro had been so much more seriously injured.

"It was a lucky shot. Cracked my humerus when it bounced off." Shrugging with her good arm, she fussed with the cover of her yogurt, trying to get it open with one hand and failing. "Doctor wants me t'wear it for a while so it can heal properly."

Without a word, Spence took over opening the top of her yoghurt, staring at Haylie slightly, "Jeez, this place just breeds injury." Just to be helpful, he twists the cap off her juice as well, since her arm is slinged up.

"My sister, Sarah, she took out her arm once playing baseball at school. Broke her femur in two places and was in a cast for months. Of course, me being me, I ended up helping her out all the time. Even wrote her homework." He'd been a bit of a pushover when it came to his twin, but back then they'd still had their father and it was only right to take care of an injured sibling.

"So, um, if you need help with anything, just ask, okay?"

Daken had himself in a lovely, civilized conversation with the Head Cook. That was to say that they were in a heated argument after Daken had dared complain about the quality of food that was being served. There was much yelling involved, metal objects thrown, and one last colorfully worded phrase where Daken told him just where he could shove his pots and pans.

Storming off, his temper fully spent, he sat down on top of one of the tabletops, feet propped on the back of one of the chairs as he lit a cigarette. It was the same table Spencer was sitting at. Noticing the notebook and cup of coffee, Daken tilted his head, trying to read the words upside down. "Planning to go all Unabomber on the camp?"

Looking up, Spencer frowned. "Considering this is neither an airport or a university, I really don't think so." The notebook was closed, Spencer's frown just increasing.

"Is there something I can help you with?"

The lazy sprawl, the lack of regard for property or items, the fact that this one had just had a rather interesting and loud 'conversation' with one of the people behind the counter, well, Spencer couldn't help but overhear.

It all made the journalist a little wary.

The feral mutant leaned forward, inching his way into Spencer's personal space. His usual utter disregard for anyone's feelings but his own was well in place. He was sizing Spencer up, seeing where he fell in the scheme of predator and prey.

"Many things, I'm sure." Daken smirked and then winked at Spencer. He was already developing a reputation for paying the unwanted kind of attention to female members of the team, so switching it up with a guy was something new. If nothing else, he'd get pleasure out of making the other man uncomfortable.

He was uncomfortable, but mostly because this guy didn't seem to do the annoying effective flirting that Rictor tried to do and Spencer was a little worried at that. "Right, well, just make sure any of those requests aren't lewdly inappropriate and I'll see what I can do."

What was with this place and people unaware of personal space. Before now, Spencer could honestly say he'd never really been flirted with by a member of the same sex. Now, that wasn't true and there were two people doing it. There must've been something in the water.

"Is there anything specific that you want right now? As in, why are you sitting on the table and," he didn't want to use the word 'bothering' although it was strictly true really, instead Spencer waved his hand in a sort of abortive indicator towards the slight encroaching on personal space.
