Logan might eat a lot, but that didn't mean he took long to do it. And with Jean waiting for him, fresh from the showers, he wasted no time getting back.

As soon as he entered the female dorms, he heard her voice, and she wasn't happy. Logan wondered briefly if Olivia had started to complain about him sleeping in the room - which he could respect, though he wasn't planning on going anywhere - but even that shouldn't make Jean as, well... as pissed off as she was sounding.

He stopped to listen at the door, not even sure why he didn't just walk in as he had done a dozen times before. It might've been the scent of the other male that stopped him - though he wasn't expecting anything like that. What he heard was at least as unexpected, though.

It wasn't Jean. That was all Logan could think. It wasn't her. The words barely even sunk in, but the tone, the raw anger... In nothing did they resemble the Jean he knew. He wouldn't even have thought she was capable of being this way - and that raised more questions than he cared to deal with ( ... )

Logan closed his eyes again, focusing on Jean's touch. It calmed him a little. But even if Jean was quick to forgive, Logan was not. He wouldn't go out looking for blood. That much he could do, for her. But he couldn't promise her he wouldn't hurt Martini, because he knew damn well that the next time he'd run into the nutjob, the emotions, the need for revenge, would come rushing back. That goddamn loop joke could've cost Jean her life, with Victor on the prowl.

So he said nothing, exhaling slowly as he slid an arm around Jean's waist, squeezing gently. He needed the closeness now more than ever. Suddenly, something stood between them - something solid and unyielding - and although part of him realized that it wasn't something he could make disappear just like that, he had to try.

She slid over into him as his arm went around her waist. She needed to kick this in the ass, keep it from getting too far outside her control.

And she simply needed Logan, which was the hardest part for her to wrap her head around. Jean never needed anyone. The one person she'd asked to teach her had turned her down, and that was the last time she'd reached out. But here she was, reaching out to Logan, desperate to know that he would be there for her.

Her feeling side had been right. She was going to shatter him into a million pieces.

Jean pulled back and looked at him, her eyes roaming his face before she settled on his eyes. "I love you," she said in a quiet voice. She meant every word of it.

He looked at her as she pulled back, studying her, trying not to. He knew she wasn't lying when she said she loved him - he knew it; he felt it. So why couldn't he just ignore the nagging feeling that something was wrong? If she loved him, what else could even matter?

"Love you too," he whispered, then kissed her, briefly but passionately, trying to chase away all trace of doubt.

With his head resting against hers, his hand around her waist moved up her back a little, not gently, barely touching her, but hard and heavy, holding her close. He wasn't letting go.

"Let's go back to your room."

She wrapped her arms around him as he kissed her, relaxing into it and returning just as much passion as he was giving. She was relieved, glad he said it back, glad he seemed to mean it. She rubbed her nose along his and sighed, nodding when he pulled her into him and suggested they head back to her room.

Jean stood up and took Logan's hand, leading him back to her room. Once inside, she crawled into bed and held her arms out for him, intent on holding him and being held as they slept.

If she slept.

Everything was very out of balance right then.
