age before beauty (nudge to sinister)

Nov 27, 2009 20:04

The halls were dark and quiet as Heather headed through the compound to the infirmary. She had no inkling that all over the camp children were displacing adults, had no clue that a young man, now a boy, had caused the sudden changes in a wide variety of the base's inhabitants. Aside from Amanda, and very briefly Nicky, she'd made no friends as of ( Read more... )

Sinister assumed that he wasn't the only one affected but he was quite sure that he would be one of the only ones able to reverse the physical effects of whatever had happened--aside from the other shapeshifters in camp. He wondered if the other doctors had been caught in whatever had happened; the infirmary had been dark when he'd opened the doors and turned on the lights.

He was pulling on his white lab coat when the voice made him turn. An older woman stood in front of him, someone who Sinister was sure wouldn't have been a candiate for this team normally. Which meant she was suffering from whatever had woken him this morning.

"I'm a doctor," Sinister said, stepping into the doorway from the office. "Are you well? And how old were you when you went to bed?"

Heather turned with better reflexes than she looked like she should have. It felt incredibly slow.

Her blue eyes narrowed at the young man's question.

"As far as I can tell I'm in spiffy shape for a human on the high side of sixty - or a mutant nudging a hundred," she said sharply. Her voice had deepened a little. Developed a dry quality it lacked normally. "You tell me, you're the doctor."

She moved towards him with no hesitancy, direct and straight as ever. "Name's Heather Cameron and I'm twenty four."

Wonderful. Sinister loved the temperments of the old--a temperment that now apparently extended to include the young as well. Physiology would win out every time.

Sinister pulled over a chair for Cameron since the tables were raised slightly. "Twenty-four. You look stunning," he said, just as dryily as her. "Sit. Let me get your chart." He turned back to the offices.

Heather reached out a hand to catch his arm. "Before you do that, tell me why you asked about my age?"

It wasn't temperment, just the fact that some one or some thing was screwing with her. She didn't tend to take that lightly. The only thing that pissed her off more was when other folks were screwed with.

If this was... some regular thing that happened to the new people? Or... she couldn't imagine why anyone would impair their own team, so maybe some kind of enemy espionage? She wanted to know.

"I've seen your sort of mutation before," Sinister said with a nod. "Though it's unstable and therefore accordingly rare. Therefore it probably is a good guess." He gave her a small, cool smile. "And you are welcome. If something other than the obvious doesn't feel right, please come back. Your body is not twenty-four."

"Will do."

Her head had tilted a little at the 'unstable' remark. "I'm betting you'll be busy, if this is affecting everyone. Sometime I'd like to hear more about the 'unstable' thing, though."

Heather turned to the door. "Ta, Doc."

Sinister assumed that she already knew anything that he would have to tell her since she was living it, but is was always better not to assume. He nodded slightly. "Take care."
