What should I expect while job hunting?

Hi I just found this community today and since I have such little job hunting experience I assumed this would be a perfect place to ask a few questions to prepare myself for the hunt. Okay I've only had one real job and that was in fast food almost eight years ago when I first turned seventeen so I don't think I can put that down on applications ( Read more... )

Being that you have such little experience I'd say put down the fast food job, and then say you've been self employed ever since. As far as how long it takes to get a call back... it varies. Could take a day, could take a month. I'd say after a week if they haven't called you go ahead and either go into the store or call them.

Because no one in my field will hire me without getting the "experience". I can't get the experience unless someone hires me.

Exactly since I can't get the experience right now I'm going to get a job working retail or what ever else outside of fast food and continue to program and write pages as a volunteer then I'll use that as the experience in future applications.

Definitely, definitely stress the "self-employed through school" angle! That's experience you've gained for sure. :)

From my experience, hearing back from someplace you've applied to can be anywhere from fifteen minutes (no joke! I was still in the mall!) to... well, never.

Love your icon!

Its been my experience that even for retail jobs, It can't hurt to call them in a few days. Even better if you go in with nice clothes and a big smile so they can't brush you off as quickly. I did that once and got an interview on the spot.

Also be sure that when you do get an interview, talk about how far you went in helping your customers and ensuring that they got exactly what they needed and then some. Retail loves it when you have the ability to sell customers extra things that compliment the initial item they ask for.

It might also help to go to their websites and poke around the store section as well as the career section and learn their catch phrases. Use them and show how great you are at implementing said phrase. I know Sears had "discovering customer needs" for a while.

I'm going to have to agree with previous comments and definitely say to play up the "self-employed" angle.
