I joined Linkedin a few months back and it has been producing leads for me.. I even have an informational interview with a vary interested CFO because of it. Like all things, it does take commitment and time to build a solid Linkedin reputation, but it's worth it

If they're not already on LinkedIn, invite them.
If they already are, so much the better.
Once they are, recommend them & get them to return the favor.
Then, your other connections can see your recommendations;
and, better yet, all you have to do to avail yourself of them is print them out & give them out along w/ your resume/cv.
At least one good recommendation from your last two jobs can make all the difference, and especially when you've got them ready instead of the potential employer's having to go dig it up; they're an extra point or two in your favor w/ the HR types, and if you're applying to a small company where you're meeting with the decision makers from the get-go, those ready-to-go recommendations tend to impress.
