I was reading an article on Web Design and it disscussed building a network of contacts in the areas one is weakest in. This may not always pay for you or for them, but the professional relationship that is built up can benefit both parties in the end ( Read more... )

Be careful with barter. You can do something for a friend. They can do something for you. If it's actual barter, the IRS wants a cut. If you want to know what's allowed, you should talk to someone with real expertise in this area.

BTW, I have know idea if anyone from the IRS reads LJ.

Of course, and some folk smay actually benefit from this as a form of "volunteer work" - writing it off as a loss in some cases.

But this is a sticky area to be sure. The basic idea, is as long as it is under 500 (for the US at least) they won't sniff too much at it. I remember seeing an article on it somewhere. If I find it I'll post it. :) Unless someone beats me to it first.

Hey there, I'm a professional web designer/developer who does partner with other experts in the field. When I take on a project that needs snappy Flash animation, I bring an animator in because my Flash is more utilitarian and less 'creative'. WHen it comes to advanced dynamic programming, I hire in a PHP/MySQL guru to flesh out those aspects of the site but that's only for clients with really big bucks. Custom dynamics costs in the tens of thousands. For graphic design, I use my husband because that's his skill set and he turns out the concept work and .psd comps for the project. So I'm the project manager and design coding expert (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax) as well as web marketing guru ( ... )

What say you about the influx of the "cheap designers". Folks that come from areas typically like India (No offense folks, this is just the majority of what I've seen).

How do you get around such lower end out-sourced worked?

Outsourcing pricing has come up a time or two in my negotiations along the lines of: "But I can get this team in Pakistan to do it for half of that cost ( ... )
