*waves* Hi all! My name is Amanda, I'm 23 from NYC, recently graduated with an English BA, and I am currently ready to sicc a Nazgul on the economy because I am unemployed

Not to dash your hopes by any means, but office work/reception often requires some math as well, even if it's just petty cash. And speaking as another girl with just a BA and varied work experience, I should warn you that it's also difficult to get in to one of those roles without experience (so frustrating!) unless you go through a temp agency-- so I'd definitely make some appointments with agencies in your area and see if they can help. :)
Yea, I know about the whole cash thing. I wonder if it's a sign that I should look into working with animals (doggie daycare, shelters, etc) because I'm starting to feel like I'm too damn quirky and wird for the corporate world. *head desk*
Yea, I signed up for one or two temp agencies but I think I did it wrong. Forgot which ones they were, but it confused the hell out of me. I've gotta ask around and see which ones are good.
Hi fellow NYC-er! I feel you on the math thing, I barely passed math in college with the minimum grade possible. I don't know how I did it. I recommend trying a few temp agencies in the area: Professionals for Non-Profits and Forrest Solutions are ones I've worked with that have yielded results. They're both in Manhattan. You could also try retail jobs where you don't have to use the cash register, like floor staff or greeters, etc. If you get desperate, you could probably get a job handing out flyers and stuff on the streets - there seem to be plenty of those jobs to go around. Good luck - it's brutal out here :( I'm still struggling to find full-time, permanent work and the competition is cut throat.
Thank you for the recommendations! It really IS brutal out here-I'm SO at the "hand out flyers/be a retail greeter or floor staffer" point. Grrrr.
It also sucks b/c the belly dance world is SO competitive, and a lot of the crazies and less talented dancers are greedy, manipulative trouble makers who hog all the gigs and trash others. Otherwise I'd go around to a few of the Middle Eastern or Greek restaurants in my neighborhood to see if they want another dancer. Only problem is, either there's a professional dancer there or it's been claimed by a certain dancer and her teacher who are known to be manipulative and gig-hogs.
HOnestly, I found it to be a non-issue because no one would hire me until I was 18 anyway, even though I wanted to work. My high school was too stringent and wouldn't give me a work permit either because my grades were already terrible. Duh, I didn't want to be there. Anyway, you had to have a job to get the permit, butI couldn't get hired without the permit already in my hands. It wasn't until was graduated that I realised the only way to work it out was to have someone you already know (family member or family friend) give you a job.
