Self-Fail

Nov 04, 2009 10:57

I just (literally) sent out cover letters/resumes, and have noticed I had a typo in the company's name.

EPIC FAIL

I want to crawl into a corner and die.

... sometimes, they don't notice. Really!

Or, send them another one ASAP, and whoever clicks through the emails will click that one first, realize there's a duplicate and the first one will never be looked at.

....Aaah crud. They've already sent me a response email (thank you for your interest!) so...Um. Er. *headdesk*

I did the same thing this weekend - wrote in my cover letter that I was applying for a position at Company X when I actually meant Company L. I realized it a couple of hours later and re-applied with a corrected cover letter apologizing for my previous error, but I figured that I wouldn't hear from them.

And then they called me yesterday to schedule a phone interview. So definitely send out another, corrected version! They might be impressed by your conscientiousness.

They just sent out a "thank-you response" email (thanks for your interest, we'll call you back) so...now I don't know if sending a new cover letter would work. >> (I didn't expect a reply so soon, otherwise I would've sent the fixed letter.) At least I have new contact info for the cover letter...

If it's a small typo I ignore it often times, especially if it is apparent that it's a typo and not a general lack of spelling & grammar skills. Sometimes I don't even notice a small typo at all until I have already recommended an applicant for an interview. If your resume and cover letter are otherwise strong, don't sweat it, it may not even be noticed, and if it is, the reader may not care.

I once had a typo in the company's name, but still got an interview. I didn't get the job then though, so I still wonder if they maybe looked again at the letter and the typo, but I don't really think that's the case.
