I was fired from Sears this morning.  They gave me two or three different ID numbers, and I can never remember which one I'm supposed to punch in at the start of my shift, so they have me listed as coming in late or not at all.  (Though I think missing the bus today was what broke the camel's back for them; apparently the driver did not see me at ( Read more... )

Food stamps and a bus pass are not tied ot unemployment, you can get those just for being poor...

At least in my state.

The laws are different from state to state. In Wisconsin, the rule is: "While it is often true that you are eligible if the employer fires you, we must investigate the separation. Since the employer caused the separation the burden will be on them to establish to our satisfaction that you were fired for misconduct. If we conclude so, you will be disqualified. Misconduct may include chronic tardiness, theft, falsification of employer documents, insubordination or various other actions."

(from http://www.dwd.state.wi.us/uiben/benfaq2.htm)

We'll see whether the business with the punch-clock counts as "chronic tardiness" or "falsification of employer documents".

But food stamps are not unemployment... the money comes from a different place. It's a federal welfare grant, not the state provided federally matched unemployment funding. IT's completely different.

You can so get unemployment if you get fired. My boyfriend was on UE for a year after being fired from Home Depot. Also, you don't have to list anything on your resume that you don't want to, just have a good reason for the gaps.

if they do contest it - ask for ALL of the time card sheets for ALL of the number they provided you with, AND the documentation for every computer system you had to log into throughout the day...

At work, I might forget to punch in -but in order to do my job i have to log into the phone system.

If you were a cashier, even if you forgot to punch in, you'd still have to log into most places on the register. Hell if they push it too much, ask for security tapes to prove you were there, and working.

As for having to list "all" of the places you've worked - depending on what state you're in/laws nothing counts until after your 90 days are up. At least in NC they will not take it into consideration if you are fired/quit before 100 days. Especially when applying - there is no way i'd list somewhere i hadn't worked for more than 100 days.

Yes. Agreed. I cashier in my part time role. I log in on arrival with my staff number on the clocking in machine (a swipe card) and then I have a separate number so checkouts cam track me as I move around till points. Log in there too, log out, regular cash uploads and receipts. Log out on the clocking out point at the end of the shift. If broken, a missed clock slip or manual sign out on the security register.

You are correct, food stamps have nothing to do with unemployment.

Sorry to hear this, but as a long-time firee, it'll end up being alright. Have you looked into a skills-based resume at all? You don't have to list this job on your resume at all. You can even choose to skip it on applications if you want to too. It's better to play up what you can do and the skills you have than this job or that job.
