1. I'm going to be honest, I've been in your position, in South Florida without a car. The difference is I realized that 'within walking distance' wasn't going to work. I found ways to use the bus. If you're able, find a way to your local Workforce or Labor Office (that works directly with Unemployment) and ask if they have any special programs to assist you in either affording a bus pass to help in your job search, or assisting in other things (like food, bills, etc) so that you can afford that bus pass. Honestly, if I hadn't been able to use the bus, I probably wouldn't have found a job at that point. Though sadly, I have a car now and I'm going on 13 months of unemployment

have you tried a dollar store or Aldi? (groceries OR jobs) my parents are the unofficial spokespeople for Aldi; their grocery bill was cut in half when they started shopping there.
do they give them to FT students? i'm looking at some eligibility requirements here and looks like i don't have enough money/income/whatever to even be eligible. i'll look more, though. thanks for the tip!
Speaking as someone from Maryland, which isn't quite the Deep South but does hit fabulous upper-90s with high humidity much of the summer, I'd second the suggestions above about carrying nice clothes with you and changing when you get to your destination. Also, definitely check out the bus option! I know not every town has them, but it's worth a look
