9 days. That's the first thing she realized when she awoke screaming. She'd been out cold for over a week. And, as if that wasn't enough, she was unable to remember any outright use of her powers while she'd been in the camp. But, if the feeling in the pit of her stomach was any indication? It was far from good. The last time anything like this had ( Read more... )

He'd heard about the hospitalisation by accident. Two guards had been talking and Spencer had just over heard them, it had been that simple. He'd never caught Haylie's second name, but the description they'd given of the incident had just rang for a while in his head and his curiosity had gotten the better of him. So he went to check.

He'd been to see her five times over the nine days, worrying just a little. But she'd said it took a lot out of her, and he could understand that. He contented himself with just asking the nurses if anything had changed. His demeanour probably helped his cause when they just smiled at him and told him the basics.

She was just resting, she was just exhausted, it would just take some time.

He'd just come in to see if there'd been any change since the last time he'd been in, holding a cup of coffee from the mess hall in his hand when he noticed she was awake. "You're awake." It was possibly the most obvious thing to say in the world, but really, nothing else sprang to mind.

The first thing that registered in her mind when Spencer entered the room was coffee. She smelled coffee. Oh, what she wouldn't give for some coffee right now. Or food. Or... getting the hell out of there. Then it occurred to her that she recognized the voice. And who it belonged to.

With newfound strength, she managed to prop herself up on shaky arms and lifted her head to smile warmly at Spencer.

"I think I've died and gone to heaven."

"Oh, no, no dying and going anywhere." Smiling softly, Spencer looked around to see if there were any nurses nearby. There weren't, but he wasn't about to go looking. "How're you feeling? You okay?"

He knew that she'd be tired; the amount of power she supposedly released she'd be sore for a while too Spencer guessed. Most of his theories were coming from his own experiences with his powers, but it was pretty simple to work out from what Haylie had told him.

Placing the cup on the small tray to the side of the bed, Spencer carefully leaned on the edge of her bed, watching her.

"I feel like I blew up the whole goddamn base, to be honest." Trying to keep it light, she forced a smile through her mussed up hair that stuck to her face and effectively hid her eyes. Because she couldn't remember shit and it terrified her.

Haylie's arms shook more as she pushed her body forward slightly, swinging her legs off the side of the bed and sitting up more. This took a little more out of her than she expected and as she tried to stand up, fell forward.

"Only the outdoors part of it." He'd seen the damaged area, it was currently being repaired, so that was probably a good sign. But Spencer figured something really had to push her to it.

"Woah," as she pitched forward, Spencer barely caught her before she landed on the cold, hospital tile floor, easing her back to sit on the edge of the bed. "Maybe it's a little soon for you to be getting up, hmm? It's been a few days."

She was probably a little weak just because she'd been in a prone position for so long.

"Great. I'm in deep shit and I don't even know why." She muttered under her breath, fingers gripping his arms tightly as she tried to steady herself. At least she knew her legs worked, she supposed.

With a huff, she blew her bangs away from her eyes and shot him a stubborn glare. Which really only made her look like a five-year-old who got stuck in time-out. She hated hospitals. And right now she was vulnerable to anything since she was powerless until she got some food and got her temperature back up. Reaching out, she grabbed one of his hands - and this time her skin was almost cold to the touch. "Will you just help me get the hell outta here?"

"Not until you've been checked, and you can stand." It was a little strange, sure, having felt her skin before and being so acutely aware of just how hot she ran, now she was feeling like she'd been in the walk in freezer for a few hours.

"Let me get a nurse and then we'll talk about getting you out." And then they'd see about food and some rest elsewhere. Spencer wasn't beyond locking her up in her own room if he had to.

"That'll be another couple of days at this rate. C'mon, Spence, please?" Haylie wasn't above batting her eyes and begging right now. She just wanted to go someplace that wasn't the med bay. And she was about two seconds from stealing his coffee too. Not that the coffee would get her very far in this state.

"Do I have to bribe you? 'Cause I'm not opposed to bribery here. What can I bribe you with? Food? Money? Electronics? Sex?" Desperation. Yeah, she was gonna blame desperation for the way she was acting right now.

The blush rose quickly over his cheeks, going as far as to colour the tips of his ears red. "I, no, no I was uh." He had to mentally slap himself to stop babbling.

"What if something is wrong? What if you hurt yourself?" He really didn't want her to be uncomfortable, and if the medical area was doing that then sure, but at the same time he was worried that something serious could be wrong.

She did look like a petulant five-year-old with her little pout and batting eyelashes, but it still put Spencer a little on edge.

The blushing just lit up her face and caused her to grin like an idiot. Because, really? She never got tired of making him blush and if she was honest about it? Haylie wanted to be the only one who did it. "The only thing that's wrong is that I'm starvin' and I'm powerless until I get my temp back up."

With a sigh, Haylie's shoulders dropped in defeat and she decided to steal Spencer's coffee. Which she did and managed to down half of it in one go. "You worry too much."

He'd actually been looking forward to that coffee. Now he just stared at her as she practically drank it in one go. Oh, well, she said she needed to get her temperature up. "Fine, we will escape this place, you'll ruin my hard work in sweet talking all the nurses, and we'll get you something to eat."

Grabbing a robe from the small table beside Haylie's bed, Spencer draped it over her shoulders for her to slide her arms into before dropping to fish her shoes out from under the bed and slip them on her feet. "But the first time you fall flat on your face, you're coming right back here."

And he'd make good on that. After he got her something to eat and something warm to drink, because his coffee had to be lukewarm at best.

Haylie caught Spencer staring and, after a moment of awkward silence, she smiled sheepishly and held out the half-full cup of coffee apologetically. However, after he agreed to get her out of there, she grinned and slid her arms into the robe and got the shoes on.

"You should so be gettin' sex for this."

She chose to ignore the last comment because she wasn't gonna fall on her face, damnit. This was about her pride right now. Because she liked Spencer and doing anything embarrassing was out of the question.

His cheeks still hadn't lost the colour and suddenly the floor was the most interesting thing in the world. It wasn't that he was a prude; nothing like that. He just wasn't used to the forwardness of it. He was raised by a woman that believed in a man courting a woman, his Dad had done it, his Pop had done it and his Momma had taught him better than to treat women as anything less that the wonderful creatures they were.

Haylie was definitely getting a rise out of him.

"I um, yeah, that's, shall we?" He cleared his throat, ignoring the coffee she offered him with a wave of the hand and shake of his head and placed his hand at the small of her back for support. "Don't rush though."

Haylie figured out a while ago that he was old-fashioned and she found it endearing, really. And she'd also been raised that the man should court a woman, like her father had with her mother, but she was also a true blue-blooded New Yorker. And that wasn't exactly conducive to making her tactful or docile. And she couldn't help that Spencer was freakin' adorable when he was being shy.

"I owe you big time for this. I'm serious." Haylie grinned appreciatively and finished off the coffee before getting to her feet slowly. Skittering over to the monitors, Haylie turned everything off before pulling all of the wires off and ripping out her IVs.

"Alright. Let's get goin'."
