Wrong Hand

--

“What’s that?” Jackie shrieks, starting in on him from her position in the kitchen doorway, before he’s finished walking through the door.

“Not a wedding ring!” he says brightly. “Very definitely not a wedding ring!” And he shoots a look at Rose that says I’m-so-very-brilliant and what-were-you-worried-about?

“Wedding ring?!” And she’s off. “I knew it! Oh, I knew you were up to no good in that bloody box of yours. Dragging my daughter off, halfway across the bloomin’ universe, filling her head with weird ideas and- married. Oh, God! Married!”

He shoots Rose a look over her mother’s advancing head. This time he’s sure it’s horrified.

“My only daughter, stolen away, gone for a year! A whole year and I knew there was something going on. I knew it. And now - now I don’t even get to go to her wedding.”

“No, no-no-no-no. Oh no,” he says, casting about for a lifeline. “I said ‘definitely not wedding rings’. See?” And he holds up his right hand. “Wrong hand. Entirely wrong hand. Can’t be married if it’s on the wrong hand, now can we?”

This seems to stump Jackie for a moment and, relieved, he takes the opportunity to skip around her and duck behind Rose. He takes her hand and, when he catches the look on Jackie’s face, decides it was probably a very bad idea.

“Not married, huh? She’s wearing one too!” He looks at their clasped hands, matching rings sparkling in betrayal, and drops them, even though the damage has been very obviously done. “What do you think I am, stupid?”

“Well,” he says, slipping his ring off and putting it back on his left hand. “It was worth a shot.”
