As a university student finishing up her third year, I definitely agree with the "Why The 'Research Paper' Isn't Working" piece. Research papers are fine in high school, I think, but I, at least, have never been taught to go beyond the standard "five-paragraph essay". Now, as I move toward the end of my undergraduate education, I'm realizing that I don't know how to write a fifteen-page paper. I don't know how to write my senior thesis. Part of this is, as the article says, that I see patterns and conclusions but don't know how to back them up. (There is also the issue of being able to procure sources - that is, if your school doesn't have access to a particular database or doesn't have a copy of a book you want.) But it's also that I don't know how to organize an essay of that length.

This rant, I suppose, is more from a student's perspective. But I'd love to know how some people address these problems as teachers, and how I can possibly work on such problems with my own students.

Your experience is unique, so I won't lay claim to any special understanding. But, generalizing across contexts, I can sympathize ( ... )

I deleted because my comment made no sense and I can't edit.

I think it's weird that the "oink oink" teacher received a lighter consequence than the "underpants" teacher, when to me, the underpants teacher was just trying to solve the mystery of the poop on the floor, whereas the "oinky" teacher was tired of her student being messy and could possibly have emotionally traumatized that kid for years to come.
