5 years ago this month, I...
  • had just broken up with a man I had lived with and was finally getting to know myself!  I had stayed in this little town for “ that guy” and all my friends were over here in Seattle. It was a tough year!

It was a one room school house in Ellensburg. The school has moved locations since and I'm not quite sure where it is based out of now. I was the very first teacher (and employee) at that school which was pretty neat. It was such a neat year and those kiddos and their parents were just the coolest people I've ever had the pleasure to work with! I mean, I saw these parents pretty much every day and it was like we were all friends. We only had "parent-teacher" conferences to keep up appearances because there was really no need since we all communicated so regularly. It was a nonprofit too, so we did lots of fundraising which was pretty neat. :o) Ah, my first year of teaching~ what a fun memory!

That sounds like such a wonderful experience...
And how great to have a first year of teaching like that.
I have always thought it would be fun to teach in a one room school house...how did you find a job like that?

The school was started up by a few professors from Central and some people who were really involved in the town itself and I just happened to have a had a few professors that recommended me to them and so they gave me a call and asked me to supply them with a resume if I was interested in the job after they described it to me (which I was). Plus, the guy I was dating at that time had been teaching locally for several years and also knew some of the folks starting the school up and he of course gave me a glowing "word of mouth" recommendation. :o) So I guess I didn't get the job in a very traditional way. However, I think you can find jobs like that sometimes just by asking the district office you are intrested in what private schools are in the area. Usually the district office knows. You can also regularly watch the paper because nonprofit schools like that are often in the paper since you have to regularly have fundraisers and other such events.

OK, I haven't posted in so long that I'm blabbing on and on. Sorry! :o)

What a fun post Jessica. Things like this are always so interesting to me in learning about others.

Did you know Jennifer or Tony Hellmann? They went to Oak Harbor HS.
