Devastating deaths of television characters

Well, Ianto is dead. All the rumors were true, and, as blackbird_song pointed out, people we trusted have lied to us. RTD isn't that big a surprise, but Barrowman and Gareth? They encouraged fans of the relationship by saying that we would enjoy it, and then blindsided us. I haven't seen the episodes yet, but I'll keep the DVDs when they come, ( Read more... )

One of the most intriguing parts about the M*A*S*H episode with Henry's death is that none of the actors had received the final page of the script. When Radar walked in tot ell them the news, the actor had just been given his lines outside. Their reactions were true reactions.

We never want our favorite characters to die. Mine was Owen. Plus many mor ein many other shows.

My internet connection was down all day; sorry to be so slow responding. I'd forgotten that fact about the MASH episode, and it was Radar's delivery that made it even more devastating. Reminds me that Barrowman insisted on filming the reaction to Tosh's post mortem message on the first take, and that worked brilliantly too. And I miss Dumbledore too; guess we'll be seeing that in a few days.

Have you watched "Children of Earth" yet? If you haven't, I'd advise you to continue that way. Having watched it, I have zero interest in seeing any more of RTD's TW.

If you have watched it, what did you think of it?

Thanks for commenting! Yes, I watched CoE. My main objection is not so much Ianto's death, although I hated that, as it is the way his character was assassinated during the whole series. Where was the man who made the first move on clueless Jack in "They Keep Killing Suzie;" initiated the kiss is "To the Last Man," publically claimed Jack in the dance in "Something Borrowed?" All of a sudden we have a self-doubting, clingy little girl. True, he got Jack out of the concrete, but brilliant, resourceful Ianto would not have walked into Thames House unprotected. Of course he would have followed Jack into hell, but he would have done so in full body armor, or at least a gas mask! And was it really necessary to make him out a liar after he was dead?

Sorry for the tirade; it's been four months and I should be over it. As far as I'm concerned, my Torchwood died with Ianto; I have no interest in the Jack & Gwen show.

Sorry to be slow responding; my stupid internet provider was down all day. Like I wasn't upset enough by the Torchwood developments.

I still wish GDL hadn't said anything on his site about hoping it would be fun to watch, unless he pictured his fans loving to wallow around in a tear-jerker. Crying is not FUN, sweetie.

I don't think Ianto's death contributes anything except reiteration of the view that life and death and the universe are random. But at least they gave him a "good" death: quick, painless, in Jack's arms, with the time and courage to say "I love you." The last thing he saw was Jack's face, the last thing he heard was Jack's voice. It could have been crueler, but not much more senseless.
