Yep, though I did go many years without. Would you like to see what I did before I got a tablet? I did stuff like this. Shit took a goddamn month, and even then I only managed to get the hair to look decent after I finally got a tablet. And possibly have the patience of a goddamn saint.

(Moral of the story - digital artists who don't have tablets are probably bloody insane.)
