2011 in Books

Dec 31, 2011 20:08

New books read in the order that I read them.  In addition to the SF and fantasy binge, I  think I read more non-fiction and popular science books than usual this year.

Toni Morrison, A Mercy
Ursula Le Guin, Gifts
Tanith Lee, Sabella, or the Bloodstone
Alice Munro, Too Much Happinness
Amanda Foreman, Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire
John Gribbin, ( Read more... )

literature, end of year lists, reading

A couple Irvin Yalom books are on my to-read list. What did you think? Does he have interesting things to say? I know he's a proponent of existential therapy.

I've become very curious about different therapeutic approaches, especially the ones that derive from psychoanalysis. I'm curious about that, too --- but I know that the kind Freud practiced had a lot of serious flaws...

Andy gave me Freud's Studies in Hysteria for Christmas so I'll have more to say about him when I read that, but in general I think Freud is best viewed as a cultural critic!

I really like Yalom and find him helpful, even though I disagree with some of the things he does in therapy. Staring at the Sun is excellent. Love's Executioner is probably a good place to start because it's a fascinating book about the therapuetic process.

Great --- now that I have a solid recommendation from someone who's read some of his books, I will go ahead and read one.
