Soundtrack to our (Feminist) Lives

Last week we got together with some women friends to talk about the music that’s influenced our relationships with feminism.  We put together a playlist, listened to each track in turn, and then discussed the reasons why it had made the list.

Talking through the tracks, I was reminded of just how powerfully music becomes associated with particular  ( Read more... )

For me no list is complete without Cris Williamson's The Changer and the Changed. I bought it on cassett! I also adore Ferron and her incredible songwriting. "It Won't Take Long" is a feminist anthem

Oh, and I bought my first Indigo Girls CD because of the picture on the cover.

I love The Changer and the Changed too! I found it at a used record store in Arizona. And a friend in Manchester turned me on to Ferron (small world!)

I've never heard The Changer and the Changed. I'll have to look it up. One of the most enjoyable things about the evening was getting other peoples' recommendations.

I remember listening to "Just a Girl" and thinking, "Hey, my parents don't let me drive late at night either!" It got me to start making connections between the conditions of my life and my gender, that maybe things didn't have to be the way they were.

I've always loved the subtextual "Fuck you!" in Lesley Gore's song, and the fact that it's so defiantly *joyful* has always been important to me.

I love this post!

There is a song by Phranc, and I can't for the life of me remember the name of the song, but she gets intense on her acoustic guitar and one of the lines is, "See that I'm a lesbian...don't lay your morality on me." Damn, that song would be on my feminist song list.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Mecca Normal's "Man Think Woman"

Also, this X-Ray Spex song would be on my list:
