I think you've just summed up for me why I often have issues with CGI.
As for Loki - I thought he was great, by far the best thing in the movie. I didn't have a problem with his shift, because for me it all hung on that reveal, which I'm not going to mention because of spoilers. Before, it felt to me like a typical older/younger brother relationship (even though they never specify who's older). After, as Loki sees it, how can Thor not always be the favourite? There's a fair amount of self-hatred driving him.
Not only that but, if I remember right, he only starts trying to kill Thor after his plan to get him to stay exiled fails. Because if Thor makes it back and tells people what Loki did, they might start asking questions. It's the classic story of a lie that gets swallowed by a bigger lie, and it gets away from him in an epic fashon.
