OK, so it's morning and results are pretty much in.   The 60-seat swing in Congress is pretty much in line with expectations, but the Senate remains (just) in Democrat hands (by exactly how much depends on Colorado and Washington, but both look as if they might stay blue).   Yet all the news reports are calling it a "stunning rebuke" for Obama ( ( Read more... )

I was amused by the GOP spokesbot on Radio 4 who was trying to spin the results as being a "greater than expected" success for them. Because of course it was all people power and not the party machine, and they are just so grateful to the US public. And it's not that Obama will have to negotiate with them in the Senate, it's just that he doesn't have the moral authority to argue with the will of the people.

Do people really buy all of this?

Hard to say. There's very little political discourse at any level in the US these days, it seems. Left and right insult and dismiss one another with equal enthusiasm, and even in the serious halls of power, where one might think that a certain realism (albeit at the basest and most cynical level) might be expected, obstructivism is the name of the game, to the detriment of all ( ... )
