Lauren was heading to her locker to drop off her books while contemplating skipping the rest of the day and going home. She knew she wouldn't; she had a math test later in the day, but it was nice to pretend that going home was an option. Lost in her own thoughts, she almost didn't see the familiar blonde sitting on the floor. Lauren lightly tapped Jeff's foot with her own.
Jeff looked up upon feeling a pressure on his foot. He was surprised to see Lauren, but pleasantly so.
''Oh yeah... it's just... I don't necessarily feel like going in there.'' He said, pointing towards the vague hallway which led to the cafeteria. ''Don't you think... aren't things awkward ever since Halloween? I mean, not between you and me, but... basically us and - he finger quoted - the 50s kids. Myself excluded... which is extremely ironic.''
He sighed.
''I guess I'm having a bit of a crisis. I know so much about your era, I don't fit it with these guys anymore. Not like I ever did but... It's hard to explain. But let's just look at the facts. My song for Glee today? Hasn't been written yet. I casually speak a language that hasn't been invented yet. And most of my peers are suspicious of me. It's just me realizing, in a way, that I'm screwed if you guys go back... and you just might. That phone... that video... that WAS the future, right?''
She sighed. "I don't know, blondie. Things always felt awkward for me. Can I sit?" Not waiting for a reply, Lauren sat on the floor beside him. "I always felt an us versus them mentality, even with you, but that was before we really got to know each other."
She listened as Jeff elaborated on his feelings. "Jeff, slow down. So you don't fit in with people you knew most of your life?" She shrugged it off. "Music only got better so I don't see a need to worry about your song today. I will keep my comments regarding Na'vi to myself, but only because you look like someone kicked your puppy." She sighed again. That fucking video. Lauren hadn't really talked to anyone about it since Halloween, but she couldn't stop thinking about it. "I don't know what that was. It has to be the future, logically--It was a video on a phone, partly in color. You were there though." She offered a tentative smile. "Doesn't that help you feel better?" Even as she said the words she kinda doubted it.
Jeff started to reply to Lauren's question when he suddenly saw that wasn't necessary. She wasn't asking for permission, clearly, more like stating her predetermined intentions as a question. So he simply nodded, letting one blond bang fall over his eye
