Lauren was in her bedroom, sitting at her desk. She had decided she needed to start keeping a journal- to keep track of everyone from 2011 and such. She thought if she could see everything in front of her in black and white (pun totally intended as everything was in b&w in the 50s) that maybe something would click and she would have an idea on how to return home. Her real home. So far the paper was blank. She really didn't know where to start. The phone rang and Lauren welcomed the interruption.

"Speak to me," she answered. She didn't really care that wasn't a proper fifties greeting.

"Lauren..." Mercedes' voice was soft, as she attempted to channel the proper emotion for what she just read. Sure, her brother had been perfectly alright when she left 2011. She didn't even know this fifties brother. But that didn't change anything, he was still her brother.

"The fucking fifties murdered my brother." This was stated with an even tone, which actually surprised Mercedes.

An uneasy feeling had swept across Lauren when she heard Mercedes on the other end. She really wasn't sure why, but before she greeted Mercedes, she found out why she felt alarmed.

"The fucking fifties murdered my brother." Lauren was rendered speechless as the words hit her. She swallowed. A moment of silence passed, before Lauren spoke, "I'm so sorry," the words sounded lame, but she didn't know what else to say, and she truly meant them. She suddenly had a million questions to ask. She didn't know what to ask first "What happened? How did you even find out? Are you okay? Do you wanna meet?"

Mercedes wasn't exactly sure what she had wanted. She wanted her brother to be around in the fifties as he had been in 2011. She didn't want him to be dead. Even though she knew he would be a fifties version of her brother. "There was this shoebox in my closet. I found it when I was looking at what clothes options I had for the fifties. It was hidden in the corner. It had pictures of my brother, a few newspaper clippings, a funeral program. I don't know what to do, Lauren...."

Mercedes remained silent for a moment, taking the time to figure out exactly what to say to explain what had happened to her brother. She wrinkled her nose, and spoke softly. "It wasn't very good at explaining what had happened. But, what I got out of it... there was a shooting. And Bentley just happened to be where one of the bullets was headed. I don't think they were aiming at Bentley, he was just in the way."

She sighed softly, and just shook her head. "I can't be sure if it was the shooter's intention to shoot Bentley, or someone else. Not from the newspaper article."

At Mercedes' silence, Lauren shifted uncomfortably, regretting that she even asked. When Mercedes did start speaking, Lauren watched her carefully.

"That's awful." She was cut off by the waitress returning this time with their dessert, but it was a welcomed distraction. The waitress asked if there was anything else they needed. Lauren shook her head no.

She took a bite of her pie before looking at Mercedes, "I really am sorry. This Bentley is as much as your brother as the one you actually know." She sighed and then abruptly spoke, "I think we're going to be here for awhile." Now she was sharing her random thoughts aloud.

Mercedes was glad that the waitress had come over with their pies. She was glad to not have to think about Bentley, even for a moment or two. She took a bite of her pie, and tilted her head slightly. "I think you're right. Just because I didn't know this version of Bentley doesn't mean that he wasn't my brother."

She wrinkled her nose at the comment of them being here for a while. "As much as I hate to admit it, I think you're right. I think, perhaps, we should start trying to make the best of it, until we're able to get out of here."

Lauren took another bite. "This is probably going to come as a surprise to you, but I really don't know how to make the best of a sucky situation. I think it sucks here. The people, the laws, the norms, it all just sucks. And I need to think of a new word." She frowned.
