I got an email from LiveJournal with a virtual gift celebrating my 21st anniversary of joining this site. It serves as a reminder of how long it's been.

It's sad the wasteland this has become. I blame the Russians.

I don't remember at what point the Russians took over but I was pretty much gone by then.

When I look back to when I was on the site the most (2002-2004ish), it was a lighting-in-a-bottle situation where it was late enough into the Internet that there were a lot of interesting people, but when it hadn't been flooded with normies.

Among the communities that I frequented, there were also a bunch of 20-somethings who had a lot of time on their hands because their lives hadn't taken off yet. As people left college or finally escaped dead-end jobs to start real careers, they had less time for LJ, especially with newer, flashier social media platforms appearing at the time. Once the mods had better things to do and normies and the dumb trolls flooded the arena, this place was done.
