Why you should be watching Doctor Who

After my entry on Castle yesterday, I realized that for all my ramblings about Doctor Who on this journal, I never actually made a post, with no spoilers, for the non-Whovians here (if there are any left!) on why I love it so much and why everyone should watch it.

Your reasoning for watching Doctor Who is a lot more detailed than mine usually is. I tend to just go with "Because it is awesome" and leave it at that. ;)

I usually do too, but I've got some stubborn friends... they say "okay" and then they read a summary online or something and they change their minds. :D

I love how Doctor Who fans span all kinds of fandoms!

You can't judge Doctor Who by the summaries. Its awesomeness cannot be contained by a summary. lol

Yeah, people complain about children's programming here too. Not that there isn't any (because there's entire channels of nothing but that) but what there is isn't very good or doesn't send the right messages and such. And I'm not sure that Doctor Who would really be accepted by mainstream Americans as something to show their children just because America is so crazily conservatively religious and Doctor Who is...not. There's openly gay people on it, the Doctor is certainly an atheist, and the themes are those of tolerance and acceptance which is not something that a lot of Americans believe in teaching their children, sadly.

I wonder who's in charge of the subtitling, whether that's something that BBC Worldwide handles or if they farm it out to whomever purchases the original versions. If you haven't already you might want to drop BBC Worldwide a line to let them know that the Italian dubbing leaves a lot to be desired.

Oh yeah, I hadn't considered that... You can probably guess that Italy is crazily conservatively religious too. STRONG Catholicism, to say the least.

It's so normal to me that I didn't even stop and consider that the open homosexuality and atheism might be a problem. Although it makes me sick to think that this show is overlooked for these reasons, and children get in their timeslots shows like The O.C. or... other teen-shows that I don't remember now, full of sex and drugs and no one bats an eyelid, but God forbid there's an openly gay character on a kids show!

I might consider that. I'll mention it to my other Italian Whovian friends, we might write a letter as a group, it could be stronger.
