My advice? Don't make hard on yourself, first write something that you would enjoy reading - the setting, Duncan and Methos are all that's required. As to the setting? There's a carnival up the block, or a traveling circus at the edge of town - rinky-dink rides, tinkly music, games, and the smells of caramel corn, cotton candy and corn dogs - I think it would an ideal location for an immie during the Great Depression, but that's just me - If there is a show-off mentalist on the scene, that's lagniappe. It can be a fair only blocks from Baker Street. For other possibilities - we have all been highjacked into attending a bad amateur production of something, there's a date at the local repertory theater and drinks after, summer stock [Duncan did the 17th century version], as well as the Great Globe itself [and a toothy boy among the groundlings]. The Passion Play scenario can lead to darkness. Restoration Comedy to misunderstandings, hijinks and fumbling in cascades of lace.

As to characterization... I like Duncan paying the price for being the hero and Methos paying the price of his long life and I don't think either of them is essentially a jerk.
