New Haven sights, bites, and mitzvahs

"Now for 10 years, we've been on our own..."
-Don McLean from "American Pie"

He was referring to the day that music died. I was referring to the fact I just celebrated my 10 year college reunion. Here are my observations. Lots of babies, lot less hair, lots of extra weight, and a lot of calmer more mature classmates.

I think I am more mature now. Robin and I made the trip up via New Haven in my mom's truck.

It was great. I never knew New Haven was such and "old haven" for good food and interesting scenery. Both of these observations, btw, lead me to believe that I am more mature.

Thanks to some recommendations from some Yale alums and a map Robin wisely purchased from the Yale bookstore, we explored practically the entire campus.

There is a graveyard which is home to final resting places for both Eli Whitney and Noah Webster. We got photos by each but were not sure if we were supposed to smile or not. After all, it's a graveyard. In the end, we elected to smile.

The Yale campus is breath-taking.

Here is me doing a roundoff in front of a very old special collections library

We ate at Louis Lunch which is arguably the home of the hamburger. We had hamburgers and liked 'em. They were so good that we didn't put ketchup on them. Also, we were told asking for ketchup was interpreted disrespectfully.

While driving across town to see the Yale Bowl (the football field), we nearly ran over a cute little puppy. His name is Romeo and he escaped his owner's watch and was crossing streets without looking both ways.

We stopped and Robin hopped out and picked him up. He had a collar with his owner's phone number and address on it. Robin called the number but to no avail. We then decided to type the address into my mom's GPS and Bingo! Romeo had roam-eo'd nearly half a mile away from his house. We brought him into the truck.

He was a bit timid at first but once he felt the cool A/C blowing, he could care less if he ever found his way home. We decided to bring him back anyway. His owner was just returning with a gaggle of kids as we rang the bell.

He hadn't yet noticed Romeo was missing but shot back a $1,000,000 smile that conveyed his appreciation. Robin said when she got back in the car, "We did a mitzvah!" Using context clues, I think I know what the word means now (and will stop ordering it as a soup in diners).

We celebrated our mitzvah with some Italian ice from Libby's. Man, that stuff is good. Wooster St. in New Haven, CT is just about as Italian as Mulberry St in NYC...and that is as close to Italy as I've ever been.

I wanted to stay in New Haven for some coal fired brick oven pizza but it was getting late and I felt guilty spending so much time on another college campus when my college reunion was waiting for me 3 hours North.
