[location | visual] Morning at Mattie's Apartment

Jul 10, 2011 22:44

Mattie awoke with the sun as she always does, washed and dressed, the empty sleeve of her left arm pinned up neatly, read her Bible and checked the contents of her larder. Now it's time for cooking breakfast (there's an art to doing it one-handed that she mastered years ago, and carries the burns to prove it), and only now as she sets the table ( Read more... )

[She frowns back. Her memory of Taxon is a quarter century old, but the faces are all there.]

I recall your face but not your name.

You knew me when I was a child.

[She hasn't discovered yet that in the eyes of Taxon, she was that child only yesterday.]

Yeah.

[ sorry he's monosyllabic, he's a bit in shock ]

From the looks of you, I suspect I am right in guessing you did not expect to see me at this age.

[These days, Mattie's method of dealing with shock is to barrel over it and glare it into submission.]

Something's not right with you. You were little just the last time I saw you. I mean, you said you were sixteen but I don't know, you were awfully scrawny.

Yes, I was sixteen, though I acknowledge I was small for my age. It was during the incident with Tom Chaney, I remember, that is how I am sure of how I was at the time. It is awfully impertinent of you to suggest there is something not right with me, however.

How about being sure of the time because it was all of two weeks ago?

[Mattie presses her lips into a tight line and is silent for a moment, thoughtful.]

That would certainly explain why I appear to be the only person who has aged a whit.

You turned into a big fish, Minnow. This place is more broken than I'd realized -- normally it takes decades before this happens.

[Mattie doesn't correct his use of the nickname, mainly because this is the only place anyone's ever bothered to give her a nickname. 'Little Mattie the bookkeeper' doesn't count.]

It has been decades for me. I...do not know why the same cannot be said for anyone else here.

[ Puck blows out a frustrated breath, trying to reconcile the girl he'd seen recently with the woman on the tablet now. He didn't doubt she was telling the truth; Mattie had never struck him as the type to lie, all morals and chastising his vices as she'd been -- but it aggravated him, in ways he didn't entirely understand, and he felt like he'd been somehow cheated but couldn't deduce out of what. ]

I guess you should get back to your breakfast.
