Used to be a cop back in O.Z. Part of the local Resistance unit - dirty business, but very educational. Cooking. Supervised build of my house and did a lot of the work myself. I can fix most things, provided the tech isn't too different from what I'm used to.
This is why I hesitated to ask. Feels like placing an ad in the Lonely Hearts section of the CC Sunday paper. Also feels a lot like bragging about a set of real unimpressive skills.
Police officer. I don't know if the title would mean anything to you, but I was the highest ranking one in my section. Lead a unit of officers. Major crime.
[It's good to know he's talking to someone from at least a similar enough society that basic concepts such as law enforcement doesn't have to be explained in detail. Cain doesn't think he has the patience for it right now. It's a small blessing.]
No legislature. There's no system of consequences for one's actions. No top-down sanction for that sort of thing. All we have are the Extras playing at cops, just like they play at being shop clerks and plain, simple filler while more and more real people are abducted from their homes to fill the city.
...
Yes, it bothers me. Seems like most no one else minds. But that still doesn't give me any right to tell people how to behave. Mete out punishment and so on.
[Heck, he'd have to throw one of his best friends in the slammer for shoplifting.]
"You could do what you did back in the O.Z?" DG suggested, setting aside the sketchbook in her lap - a sketchbook she hadn't actually started to use yet - in order to reply. "Taxon needs cops."
Her own relationship with the police was mixed, thanks to her regular clashes with Officer Gulch back in Kansas, but Cain was nothing like the petty minded man who had been determined to get rid of her bike. They needed some sort of law enforcement, since the hamsters left them to look after themselves most of the time. She couldn't think of anyone better for the job.
Flipping the tablet setting to visual, Cain tilted his head and gave his friend the approximation of a smile. "I appreciate it, but I can't name myself the sheriff of Taxon. I don't have the authority or the right to boss people around."
"So you earn it. Prove that you're the right person for the job."
If anyone could do it, it was Cain. DG's faith in him was both obvious and unshakable.
"I'm not suggesting that you become some sort of dictator and start making up laws for us to follow. You can just keep an eye on things."
Or perhaps they could start coming up with laws as a city? They were obviously going to be imprisoned for a long time. Why not make this place easier to live in?
