[ text | location: gilbert-sommers house ] | words are very unnecessary they can only do harm

The last few days have been awkward for Jenna. Okay, the last week or however long it's been already. She's been trying to keep to the house more than anything lately, especially since the sudden inability of EVERYONE to speak... or even type in English. for the most part, Jenna's been avoiding dealing with the tablets since she found that out, but ( Read more... )

I guess that would be too much to hope for, wouldn't it?

River wasn't staying close to home. After the initial horror at being mute, the first instinct was to move out; to seek out, find people, listen.

It explains why she is now looking over Jenna's shoulder at her totally not whiteboard drawings. Nothing, though, really adequately explains why she took pains to be as quiet as possible while getting there.

The only thing that explains how she managed to get in without alerting Jenna is the fact that Jenna thought the door opening (or whatever it was that River used to get in) was Elena.

She does, however, get that feeling of being watched about five minutes later as she's erasing her latest boredom doodle on the whiteboard. Glancing over her shoulder, she screams-

Or... would if she could actually make any sound at all. At any rate, she leaps up from the couch, still holding the whiteboard and marker. Her first thought is that a vampire has come to make her its latest snack. But she's never seen this one before, never issued an invite, so it can't be a vampire. Right? Great. That means this is some random crazy person in the city who wants her for who knows what.

She tries to ask "Who are you?" and gets nothing but mouthing the words. Frustrated, she quickly jots the same three words down on her whiteboard and holds it up for the girl to see.

Jenna is totally going to find some way to lock the windows after this.

She takes a step back, eyes wide and startled, mouth open in a little 'o' that would be making a little surprised but apologetic noise if she could manage it. Whether or not she wanted to deal with a terrified aunt today is apparently not a factor now.

It stays that way for a moment before River blinks and shakes her head 'no.'

Then, mouth set in a firm line of concentration, she tries to write 'River' in the air with her hand. Only it comes out as a Chinese character and would be backwards to Jenna anyway.

Well, the girl isn't trying to slit her throat or kill her, so that's a plus. Jenna watches, frowning a little at the... drawing she was doing in the air. Hesitating, wondering if this is part of whatever language issues everyone's been having today, Jenna takes a few steps forward. Keeping the couch between the two of them, she writes down her name and then offers the whiteboard and marker to the girl.

I'm Jenna. Who are you?

If this ends up in a game of charades because they can't communicate, Jenna is not sure she'll be thrilled about it.

I can type it, but I can't speak it. That's better than nothing.

I can't speak at all and I haven't heard of anyone who can yet. But at least typing and writing seem to still be in good use.

I really hope that doesn't change.

I'm DG, by the way. Welcome to another average day in Taxon.

That makes two of us.

Jenna. Thanks, I think. I'm not really sure what to think about all this.

It does seem a little sparse lately. But that's a handful of us who can, thank God. I was beginning to think it would be a sea of miscommunication.

I'm hoping not long. Being unable to communicate with most of the population is sadly unhelpful.
