[voice to visual] mercenaryacareApril 25 2011, 19:39:45 UTC
Jayne sighed and switched over to use the same type of tablet setting as Glitch. He didn't usually like to use visual, because he had to give most of his attention to the screen. With voice, he could get away with doing other things.
"So you some kinda genius, even with half a brain? Y'know River? You two should make a special club for half-brained geniuses 'er somethin'."
"Only half the genius I used to be," Glitch amended with a modest smile. Sorry Jayne, he likes to see as well as hear stuff, it helps things stick in the ol' noggin better.
"River? Oh! Yes, River and I go...way back, a-as long as I've been here, she has too. You know her?"
[ and Glitch loves rambling about sciencey stuff, so it works! ]
A generator, in case they shut off our power again. Just gotta tune the crystal matrix to the right frequency and...well, it'll go for a lot longer than a couple minutes.
That's a relief. [ that he's working on something in case such a thing happens, not that it happened in the first place. which leads to her next question: ] They've...done that before?
Couple times now, I think. Last summer the...Really Bad Thing- [ the capitalization-for-emphasis might be noticible ] -happened and I think everything got shut down, a-and then a few months ago with the...zombies.
[ zombie memory repression goes here ]
So my friend Paul is putting together this bunker-safehouse-thingy and and I'm trying to work out how to power it.
[There's a few long moments of a shadowy figure bent over the screen and muttering to itself under its breath before the image dissolves into static and then nothing; Rorschach has FINALLY figured out non-default settings. ...One of them, at least. The tone that accompanies the comment isn't exactly insulting, but it's not particularly friendly either.]
Glitch frowned at the muttering, but by the time he glanced to the tablet the image had clicked away. Just as well; he'd removed an access panel from the generator and removed the crystalline matrix to make adjustments, which needed most of his focus.
The voice made him slightly uneasy, but...well, a question was a question, it would be impolite to ignore it.
"Sorta," he replied. "More an attempt at making a...a backup power source. Just in case."
[It's more statement than question, but then again most of the intricacies of social interaction are beyond him. But there's honest curiosity behind the brusque monotone, for all its rudeness.]
"Calamity," Glitch replied and carefully slid a thin iridescent plate from one of the matrix's slots. "Emergency. Really Bad Things. Basically in case the aliens try and kill us again, wh-which they do sometimes if you didn't know."
Maybe that was why this person was...cranky. Folks dealt with ending up here all sorts of ways, and "cranky" was a popular one.
"Yes!" Glitch replied with a nod. And if all of this paid off and the hamsters kept their end of the deal, he'd keep right on doing it. "A self-sustaining one, i-if I can get the harmonics right. Not worrying about fuel would be very helpful."
That made Brennan tilt her head inquisitively. "A fuelless generator?" she frowned. "That would certainly be very useful. You think you can manage such a thing?"
"I think so," Glitch said, then shook his head. "No, I know so. I mean, back before-" my brain was stolen "-I built a machine that ran itself for...oh, years and year without any trouble, I just need toremember how."
Nevermind that said machine was used to torture his best friend all that time, the details aren't what's important now.

"Y-yes, just...a few technical difficulties, working the bugs out, that sort of thing. It'll do better soon."

[ not that angela will have anything helpful to offer in ways of getting it to work, but her interest is piqued nonetheless. ]
