[Holo, Location: wandering Taxon] Honeymoon's over

May 31, 2009 22:53

The Doctor - one of them, Nine - has recovered from his initial happiness at the event that didn't transpire. That is, the 'non' part of what should have been a regeneration. The one that was impossible to prevent. He isn't sure if that actually somehow made him Ten as well, but that isn't the issue at hand ( Read more... )

Mal, who is currently scrupulously peeling an apple with a knife, hears just enough of that little monologue to feel indignant about it.

"Hey, for your information, those things ain't awful obvious, nor large and important-lookin'. Real easy for an intelligent, not-idiotic person to overlook."

Mal is interrupting Nine's very important and very failing scan. He is a bit less than enthused.

"You must be the fine and upstanding captain of the firefly ship buzzing through the fake sky." He stopped working and turned back to the tablet to scowl at Mal. "It's a wonder you keep it running with an attitude like that!"

"Oh no, you're mistaken-- I don't keep the ship running with attitude-- that'd be a whole hell of a lot cheaper." Mal's general purpose in life is to make wisecracks and be deliberately facetious. He smiles pleasantly in the face of Nine's scowling.

"Right about the the wonder though-- her name is Kaylee, specifically. My mechanic. You ever seen inside the belly of a Firefly, Mister... I don't believe I know your name?"

Captains: always so pleasant. The Doctor of course begrudgingly likes the snark, though it only serves to bring the scowl to neutral, as he thinks about his TARDIS being unable to get him out of here. "You'd be surprised, attitude can work wonders."

He's only vaguely familiar with the type of ship. "Call me Doctor. The only thing I do know about your ship, aside from it's very lovely, is that it seems you have a loose buffer panel. Unless my scanner's gone completely wrong, which isn't likely."

"Plankton? You couldn't come up with a better metaphor?" Jack rolled over in bed, since he wasn't really getting any sleep anyway, and snagged the tablet off the nightstand next to it. "We're not 'complacent', we're lacking answers."

But of course, The Doctor never gives up. He respected that. He didn't like the idea that he was kicking back and doing nothing being tossed around again. "Still haven't figured out insulting everyone really isn't the best way to get them moving, have you?"

this is your punishment for questioning the plankton! im_soniced_up June 1 2009, 18:27:43 UTC
The Doctor stood up from his second try at an inspection of a replicator hatch at Jack's voice. He quite liked these holograms at first and now he was rethinking his evaluation.

"Oi, what d'you know about plankton? That was a perfectly good metaphor, thank you very much!" He didn't exactly love his words being picked apart and not by Jack of all people. Unfortunately Jack would have to hear about plankton awhile longer. "Plankton! Greek, for wanderer," a pointed look. "Happy as can be, going along with the current singing a merry tune. Something from the 1920s, I hope - those were jaunty little ditties! I suppose if you like, I could upgrade you lot to megaplankton. Though, I'd have to toss the bit about the whales..."

The Doctor had unfortunately ignored the rest of Jack's interruption, because the subject of plankton was just so interesting and varied.

"What do you expect us to do?" Brigitta grunts after he stops talking, snatching up her tablet and giving it a look that's a step off a glare, ignore the fact that she looks just a tiny bit tired, she's been trying to get back into her habit of working out lots.

"We could all panic and cower back into our rooms but you don't get anywhere in life if you're scared all the time... And I've looked all around this place and there's no obvious way out, I might as well try and get on with my life as opposed to getting absolutely terrified."

The Doctor's face comes in probably a little close for Brigitta's comfort, scowling away and rolling his eyes.

"Well don't put words in my mouth. Don't think I said panic." He grumbles, confused at where she got 'panic' from. "Being scared's only smart, you know. Now, I'm not afraid but that's because I'm not very smart, either." The Doctor thinks his eyes are eventually going to pop out of his head at all this rolling and scrunching.

"I don't suppose you lovely group have tried pooling your efforts." It's obvious they haven't, through the records and their interactions with one another.

Brigitta doesn't pull back, instead she just narrows her eyes at him "I really don't see how you getting closer will help matters you know, it must be rather uncomfortable on your end."

"I'm a all or nothing sort of woman" she continues with a faintly arrogant raise of her chin, Brigitta tends to go for the extremes in life after all, she only sees the grey areas on a very rare basis these days "panic is just a bigger kind of being scared, unless you're good at controlling yourself it's a very tiny step between them."

"We've... Tried to get organised" she admits, looking down for a moment and then glancing back up at the tablet "so far it hasn't really resulted in anything solid, but presumably there are some people making plans to get out of here."

"Plankton?" this Jack also hung up on the metaphor part. His special skill of paying attention to the wrong part of what he just heard.

But he does catch up, "Look, buddy. If got a better idea... I'm all for it." He leaves out what he's been doing himself. He's not about to tell a stranger who could be part of why they're here for all he knows.

Nine stops mid-stroll down some lovely street at the second questioning of his metaphor. "Why is everyone suddenly against plankton?"

He's thinking about how to answer, given the information he'd learned on Jack from the tablet's logs. "I can't tell you all what to do. I'm in the middle of chasing down a particularly erratic sonic pattern at the moment. I'm simply suggesting that instead of reacting to the interesting personality overhauls being done to some of you, you try to be a little more proactive."

"Okay, wanna fill me in on why we should be frightened." Leonard asks from his motel room, he was about to get some sleep and his shirt's half unbuttoned, revealing the center section of his chest tattoos, he didn't stop to think about it really. Also, it's high time someone told him he doesn't need to be staying in crummy replica motel, he keeps forgetting there's never anyone there at the desk to pay for the accommodation.

"Isn't that what people do? Get on with their lives?"

The Doctor rolls his eyes, who are soon going to pop out of his head and beg for a break if this keeps up. Really, they should at least get union breaks or something of the like. Anyway, back to the age old question of why he should be listened to.

"Because of your amygdalas." Nine might sound a little terse. He is starting to wonder if somehow whoever made this city and dragged them here had something to do with their wills.

"'Scuse me?" It's more of a 'what the fuck are you talking about' than a 'you've offended me', though. Leonard's forgotten he's stuck here, he just caught the Doctor's transmission and thought maybe it'd be wise to ask.

"There's nothing wrong with my mental or emotional state, who the hell are you to judge, anyway?" Oh, there it is, the defensive stance. Leonard might have a bit more than most to be defensive about.
