The Doctor - one of them, Nine - has recovered from his initial happiness at the event that didn't transpire. That is, the 'non' part of what should have been a regeneration. The one that was impossible to prevent. He isn't sure if that actually somehow made him Ten as well, but that isn't the issue at hand

"Hey, for your information, those things ain't awful obvious, nor large and important-lookin'. Real easy for an intelligent, not-idiotic person to overlook."

"You must be the fine and upstanding captain of the firefly ship buzzing through the fake sky." He stopped working and turned back to the tablet to scowl at Mal. "It's a wonder you keep it running with an attitude like that!"
Reply
"Right about the the wonder though-- her name is Kaylee, specifically. My mechanic. You ever seen inside the belly of a Firefly, Mister... I don't believe I know your name?"

He's only vaguely familiar with the type of ship. "Call me Doctor. The only thing I do know about your ship, aside from it's very lovely, is that it seems you have a loose buffer panel. Unless my scanner's gone completely wrong, which isn't likely."

But of course, The Doctor never gives up. He respected that. He didn't like the idea that he was kicking back and doing nothing being tossed around again. "Still haven't figured out insulting everyone really isn't the best way to get them moving, have you?"

"Oi, what d'you know about plankton? That was a perfectly good metaphor, thank you very much!" He didn't exactly love his words being picked apart and not by Jack of all people. Unfortunately Jack would have to hear about plankton awhile longer. "Plankton! Greek, for wanderer," a pointed look. "Happy as can be, going along with the current singing a merry tune. Something from the 1920s, I hope - those were jaunty little ditties! I suppose if you like, I could upgrade you lot to megaplankton. Though, I'd have to toss the bit about the whales..."
The Doctor had unfortunately ignored the rest of Jack's interruption, because the subject of plankton was just so interesting and varied.

"We could all panic and cower back into our rooms but you don't get anywhere in life if you're scared all the time... And I've looked all around this place and there's no obvious way out, I might as well try and get on with my life as opposed to getting absolutely terrified."
Reply
"Well don't put words in my mouth. Don't think I said panic." He grumbles, confused at where she got 'panic' from. "Being scared's only smart, you know. Now, I'm not afraid but that's because I'm not very smart, either." The Doctor thinks his eyes are eventually going to pop out of his head at all this rolling and scrunching.
"I don't suppose you lovely group have tried pooling your efforts." It's obvious they haven't, through the records and their interactions with one another.

"I'm a all or nothing sort of woman" she continues with a faintly arrogant raise of her chin, Brigitta tends to go for the extremes in life after all, she only sees the grey areas on a very rare basis these days "panic is just a bigger kind of being scared, unless you're good at controlling yourself it's a very tiny step between them."
"We've... Tried to get organised" she admits, looking down for a moment and then glancing back up at the tablet "so far it hasn't really resulted in anything solid, but presumably there are some people making plans to get out of here."

But he does catch up, "Look, buddy. If got a better idea... I'm all for it." He leaves out what he's been doing himself. He's not about to tell a stranger who could be part of why they're here for all he knows.

He's thinking about how to answer, given the information he'd learned on Jack from the tablet's logs. "I can't tell you all what to do. I'm in the middle of chasing down a particularly erratic sonic pattern at the moment. I'm simply suggesting that instead of reacting to the interesting personality overhauls being done to some of you, you try to be a little more proactive."

"Isn't that what people do? Get on with their lives?"

"Because of your amygdalas." Nine might sound a little terse. He is starting to wonder if somehow whoever made this city and dragged them here had something to do with their wills.

"There's nothing wrong with my mental or emotional state, who the hell are you to judge, anyway?" Oh, there it is, the defensive stance. Leonard might have a bit more than most to be defensive about.
