"Good afternoon," says Long in that radio-quality voice of his, Masterpiece Theatre accent broadcasting from your tablets, folks. He's in his sitting room, a wall of books behind him, the fire blazing merrily to one side and a teacup in the hand that is not holding his tablet ( Read more... )

"Yes?" Long said politely. "Are you looking to improve upon them to greater fluency, then, Mister.....?"

"Hello, Dr. Reid, a pleasure to make your acquaintance," Long answered, then chuckled slightly.

"I am not American by birth, Dr. Reid-- as I assume you are, by your accent. In other countries, multilingualism is frequently the norm rather than the exception. Additionally, as Romance languages, French and Spanish are made easier in their acquisition if one first possesses Latin.

"And finally: my field is languages, you see. I have worked as an interpreter." (Technically true, Long supposed.)

"In any case, if you wish a conversational partner with whom to refresh yourself, I am certainly happy to oblige."

Not native to Earth, eh? Jenny can work with that. "Hello, Mayland Long. I'm Jenny. I know Galactic Basic, if you don't already know it and would like to learn?"

"How do you do, Miss Jenny?" Long asked very cordially.

"I haven't heard of Galactic Base, no, so you have certainly piqued my interest. I should love to learn it, if you would not mind playing teacher?"

"I'd be happy to! You know Earth languages then? Other than English?" Jenny only knows English because Taxon made it so. Before that, any English she spoke was TARDIS-translated.

"Marvelous! I can think of no more pleasurable way to spend time. Well, my time, at any rate. And yes, I do. Do you have any idea what you should be interested in learning? There are quite a few to choose from, you see. I am not even sure which ones you might have heard of, and which not."

"1983, yes." Oh, Long woefully misunderstands the problem here-- he's gotten used to being almost 20 years behind nearly everyone else-- so he offers a self-deprecating chuckle.

"I know, I am behind the times. Yourself, sir?"

Poor Stefan. Long will try and be gentle.

"1864? Goodness, it must be quite a shock for you," Long says with a sympathetic tut.

(At least he's not telling you "YOU SHOULD KNOW ME, STEFAN". Since he hasn't even met the regular you yet.)

"Are you newly arrived?"
