The O.Z was saved. The Witch, vanquished, and the royal family reunited. They'd watched the two suns reemerge from behind the moons after the dreaded eclipse, together, two groups linked together by one, extraordinary young woman. The 'heroes'. The 'saviors' of the O.Z. The prodigal daughter and her rag-tag team of mismatched metaphorical relatives

And now he was here. Really here.
"Cain!" She picked up her tablet and switched it on, grabbing her helmet and hurrying out of the workshop. "Cain, it's ok. You can get out. Just need to pick up the tablet."

DG.
That's DG's voice. He pushes away from the wall, trying to find the source of the voice. "...the what?"
...can't be that thing on the table, right?

She'd explain the rest - the aliens and the glitches and the nature of the city - when they were face to face. He was strong - one of the strongest people she knew - and she had no doubt that he'd cope, but it was still a lot to deal with.

In this kind of situation, some people might ask where they are. Not Cain. He has more important things on his mind: "Where is everyone?"
To his ears, at least, it sounds a lot like How can you be so calm?

"S-sorry, I didn't mean to... I'm a friend of DG's and Glitch's. I'm Tara."

Cain! You're-- oh, I'm so glad to see you. Hang on, we'll be there soon.

That weird look in his eyes, could it be relief? Whatever it is he's projecting, Cain doesn't have a clue what he's supposed to feel. It sounds to him like he's the only one left out of the loop. As if there's an in joke he's yet to find out about. "What in the O.Z is going on?!"

"But if we're not in the Zone..."

"You know DG!? Oh, she'll be pleased as pie to hear it, 'M sure. Name's Kaylee--I work for her 'n Glitch."

"You work for them."
That tone in his voice means he'd like a clarification, no matter whether he's on his feet long enough to hear it.

"Yep. Got a repair shop in the city now, they share ownership of it, and I work for 'em." Really, it's more with them, since she's there for the higher-tech future repairs, but she's not about to rain on their ownership parade.

"Good for you. Not to sound crazy, but what city would that be?"

And, a sharper, more urgent voice at the back of his head points out: What if it was all another holographic loop?
"By picking up the thing."

"It's a monitoring device," he says, more to himself than anyone else, eying the holograph dubiously. "And some sort of communicator..." He picks it up reluctantly, wondering why he's bothering.
If he would bother, were the room just a bit less oppressive.
