8. [Location: Caritas]/[Visual] Happy Birthday to Kaylee!

Jul 31, 2010 20:03

Lorne is standing on the stage of Caritas in a pink-sequined tuxedo, complete with matching bow tie. He turns on the visual feed on the tablet on his bracelet, and holds up the microphone. Above him is a banner that proclaims in gold glitter, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAYLEE." He beams at the audience and announces, "The kind gentleman Tony Stark would like ( Read more... )

It's a classic song and Lorne does it well. Casey watches from the bar, briefly ignoring a patron waving at him.

"Yeah, yeah, I'll be with you in a minute. Pay attention, the boss is singing." He points to the glitzed up demon and gives the patron one of his 'do as I say and I won't break your kneecaps' looks.

Casey hasn't talked to Kaylee all that much, but he remembers she was pretty welcoming when he arrived, had a nice smile. Seems like a good idea to have a party, raise morale some.

Lorne waltzed down from the stage, adjusted his bowtie, and leaned up against the bar.

"So," he says, "when do you think I should bring out the cake?"

"I'd wait a while longer, people are still arriving, paying their respects to her and all."

He wipes the counter with his bar towel and then starts making a seabreeze for his boss. Figures he'll want one.

"Was thinking I'd create a specialty cocktail for her. You think she'd like that?"

Lorne smiles when Casey breaks out the Sea Breeze ingredients. He's got this one trained, all right. If he could bring Casey home with him to L.A. (assuming he ever found a way back) he'd die a happy demon.

"That'd be swell. She looks like a gal who likes something with fruit and fizz."

Martha - who was, for once, wearing her favourite leather jacket instead of her customary white coat - grinned broadly at the song. She'd wished Kaylee a happy birthday at the time, but, with one thing and another, a proper celebration had been pushed to the side. The citizens of Taxon deserved a party and Kaylee deserved to be the centre of attention.

"When's the party?"

"Drop in anytime, hon. Kaylee's already here."

The leather jacket stirs up a memory from when he read Rose - a previous incarnation of the Doctor who wore one. Lorne wonders if she took her cue from him. "Nice jacket, by the way."

She'd never had the pleasure of meeting that incarnation of the Doctor, although she understood the concept of regeneration and the changes that it involved. She'd chosen the jacket herself, hatching it based on the outfit she'd been wearing for her first adventure in time and space. She'd changed a lot since then, but not too much.

"I'll guess I'll be there soon, then. Is the karaoke compulsory?"

"Of course not! Given how much info I can gather from one song, I always let people know what they're getting into. I don't ask people to sing; usually people ask to sing for me. I'm the Miss Cleo of the stage."

Kaylee's sitting in the audience, all dolled up in the fluffy pink dress Tony had given her, and applauding Lorne with all of her might. As if they hadn't spoiled her enough already, the decorations and music and--well, all of it, really--were above and beyond anything she could have expected.

She bounces up out of her chair once the song is done, and begins the process of greeting everyone in attendance with the biggest and friendliest smile she can muster. It's the least she can do, with everybody being so shiny.

Somewhere in the meet-and-greet was Glitch, who was dressed in a green and white seersucker suit and smiling happily. He set his present (hastily wrapped and be-ribboned and quite obviously a large book) down on a convenient table and held his arms open for the inevitable hug.

"Happy birthday, Kaylee!"

While Kaylee is plenty pleased at the sight of the book-shaped package--because Glitch giving her a book means a whole world of new things to be learned--she's even more happy to see Glitch here. Glitch hugs are even better.

She wraps her arms tightly around Glitch's waist for an enthusiastic hug, and beams up at him. "Xie xie, Glitch. Glad to see you here~"

"Oh, I wouldn't miss it," he said and hugged her as well, because Kaylee-hugs were also of high quality and ought to be cherished. All good things had to come to an end, though, and he eased back with a nod of his head and a vague gesture at the prezzie. "Dunno if you were going to open them all at once or not but..." Tada?

If she does open it she will indeed find a book, a richly illustrated celestial guide to the Outer Zone's heavens. The author is Maud Beauson, but there is a note that this edition includes revisions by Ambrose Langwe.
