Kaylee felt that today, for no particular reason really, would be the day she'd go to actual stores for food instead of just hatching things up by the ranch and Serenity. She even made the effort to sift through the work shed to find a suitable basket to clean up for the task ( Read more... )

Even though the Extras creep him out, Dexter is hanging by, moseying down the street as he scans all the stores, watches the people. How many of them are actual real Taxon people and how many are the creepy pod people, he can't be sure. But after a while of moseying, he does spot a familiar face loaded with strawberries. And stuff. And strawberries.

"-- Hi, Kaylee!"

Kaylee turns around until she's facing where she thinks she heard her voice from. Straight ahead she sees Dexter and Roy. She shifts the weight of her basket to one hand so she can wave to them as she walks closer.

"Heya Dexter! An' Roy too!"

Roy is lounging on Dexter's shoulder, and Dexter smiles when Kaylee approaches. He closes the distance cheerfully, putting his hands into his pockets.

"Shopping, huh?"

"Yep. It still ain't that close to the real thing seein' as how I can get stuff for free, but 's still fun." She smiles.

"Ya gettin' a few things for yourself? Or Roy?"

"Kaylee, stop harrassin' innocent strangers."

...which is Mal's way of saying hello, as he's sitting in his bunk currently 'chillaxing' and also apparently keeping one eye on the tablets.

Well hello to you too Captain. Kaylee just smiles down at the tablet in reply.

"I ain't harrassin' a single one of 'em."

Have a little smile back in return, Kaylee. He'll continue to debate this, just for the sake of it.

"No, you're just approaching them without their inclination and then talkin' at 'em. Which is a whole different thing, I suppose?"

"It ain't that different from what ya just did to me." Yes, that's a little devious curve to her smile you can see now Captain.

"You do know those people don't have a brain in their head, don't you?" Spike points out, helpfully. What? He's bored.

"That don't mean I gotta always ignore 'em. They're talkin' back at me!" she says to him cheerfully. Of course she leaves out the part where she's noticed they don't really have too much to say. But that's just why she's been talking to a lot of them as she goes 'shopping'.

Spike snorts, which is his way of discounting arguments. "Well, yeah. They're programmed to. It's like talkin' to a Chia Pet. Might help 'em learn and grow, but it's still going to leave you feeling disappointed."

"Well 's still better'n just wanderin' all silent-like to do some shoppin'," she says, a teeeeny bit of a pouty frown on her face.

She looks down at this new person on her tablet. "What's a Chia Pet?"

In the course of his explorations, Spock had made several attempts to communicate with the 'extras' and he had enjoyed limited success. They did not respond well to either Vulcan logic or forthright questioning. It had not occurred to him to engage them in friendly discourse - as this young human was apparently doing - and the half Vulcan paused, intrigued by the possibility. Small talk was not a talent that came naturally to him, but it was possible that either the Captain or Nyota would be able to apply it successfully.

After a moment or two - and when he judged Kaylee ready to speak to him instead of the simulated individuals - Spock stepped forward and interrupted.

"Have they provided any information of use?"

Kaylee isn't all that phased by this new person approaching her. He looks quite interesting. She likes the ears. A quick glance down confirms that he's like her - not originally from Taxon.

"Hi there!" she says, starting with a friendly greeting. "Do ya mean if they know somethin' 'bout this place? Or 'bout the folks in charge what brought me an' the others here?" She shakes her head. "Nope. Not a single bit. But I got some real nice fruit here to try cos one of 'em recommended stuff to me!" That's clearly good enough free information for Kaylee, though she would like some answers about Taxon too. Mainly along the lines of 'how to get back home'.

"Don't think we've met 'fore. I'm Kaylee. Kaylee Frye."

"I believe that I would be able to utilise any information they are able to provide," he said. Although they had not revealed anything yet, there was a possibility that they could.

"No, we have not have the pleasure," confirmed Spock. He nodded his head in a cordial fashion. In Vulcan terms, it was almost an enthusiastic greeting. "I am Spock."

A pause.

"Are the fruits available here all of Earth origin?" he inquired. Spock had attempted to replicate Vulcan delicacies on several occasions, but, despite the similarities in taste and appearance, he had found the process ... unpalatable. Perhaps preparing a meal himself would have more positive effects.

"Well then there ain't no harm in askin' them questions. Maybe they'll tell ya somethin' more'n just what to get from their shops an' stands."

She smiles at him. He's acting so proper! "'s real nice to meet ya Spock. I'm Kaylee."

She looks down at her basket of mostly fruit when he asks. Earth origin? Well, technically she supposes these fruits were once on Earth-that-Was. "Ya could try hatchin' yourself some of the fruits from your home," she suggests.
