Three arguments (about fanfic) that I'm sick of seeing

May 09, 2012 18:18

I was reading a blog last night written and maintained by Lee Goldberg (I initially didn't know who he is, but in reading I discovered that I've seen a lot of the shows he's worked on and heard of two of his novels before). I was cruising the fanfiction tag of his blog (spoiler: he's not a fan of it). While there were certainly posts that I agreed ( Read more... )

Why is when people get down on fanfic they usually used the weirdest nonsensical arguments? If an author doesn't want there to be fanfic of their work, there's a really easy way to take care of that while keeping the respect of their fans: "I'd really rather you didn't do it. Please don't." There's no need to insult people or their hobbies (and seriously: all fanfic is badly written? Please).

I think Anne Rice made an anti-fanfic stance, and some fans responded by mailing her fic. But from what I recall, everyone agreed that doing so was a dick move. E. Annie Proulx has had some really negative experiences with people writing fic of Brokeback Mountain (which was a flawless story, IMHO) and mailing it to her, like, "I fixed it!". So she has come out and said very strongly that she regrets writing that story because she finds all of the fanfic that she gets sent to be really irritating. But then, at least she never fell back onto the three arguments above. Her point really boils down to "STOP MAILING ME YOUR DAMN FANFIC", which is fair.

*facepalm* Sometimes I forget what assholes fandom can be. It's really too bad that it's those kinds of fans who are coloring authors' opinions. And so sad that Proulx actually regrets writing the original!
