Of late, people have been fleeing the fandom in fear of the sheer amount of crankiness. And I have not been the least of the cranky. And I haven't been feeling too good about that. So... ( Some reasons why I like Justin Timberlake. )
What a great post. I really like the comparison with Bono. Not everyone can handle being a frontman. I think it takes a certain kind of person. Not that Bono and Justin are the same in everyway...but something about Justin makes him thrive in the spotlight. And thanks to that - in some part at least - NSYNC rose to the top of the boyband pool. Did 98 Degrees have a that kind of front man? O-Town? What about BSB? There is just something about Justin.
I also agree that he works his ass off. I don't think he has slept a day Since last summer.
And then there is the dancing. It didn't make your list...but the way he moves his body is pretty enjoyable :)
I'm actually not entirely satisified with the frontman paragraph, because there are thoughts about U2, the relationships within the band and the relationships with the world, that I couldn't quite get to cohere into clear prose. You hear them talk about each other, and it's clear that there's been some tension over the years with Bono's spotlight, but that there's also a hell of a lot of gratitude from the other three that when they go on stage and face 15,000 people, that they have the freedom to be a little off. Not that they don't interact, not that they don't cause any of the energy, but that when they are sick with the flu or just dead tired, they can pull back and just play. Nsync isn't as Justin-centered on stage as U2 is Bono-centered, but there's also something of that aspect of *having* to be on
( ... )
Again, I agree. The frontman comparison is a tough one to make...but some aspects of it are similar. Justin isn't nearly the front man Bono is, but he has that certain kind of charisma that draw people in 20,000 at a time.
As far as the song writing goes, I think it may be easier for U2 to write as a group. NSYNC is made up of 5 singers, not necessarily 5 musicians like U2. For some reason I see the song writing efforts of a band like U2 being more collaborative than in a vocal group like NSYNC. I also think this relationship (drummer needs guitar player) is what allows bands to stay together longer than vocal groups (singer needs singer). Just a thought.
*Very* well said!! A lot of what you wrote is perfectly, exactly true, and all of it is stuff I would've never thought of on my own. Or if I had, I wouldn't have been able to coalesce it into anything coherent.
Thank you! I'm kind of sorry now that I didn't try to spread it as a meme challenge -- take whoever you've been cranky about lately and write three or four things you really like about them.

It always fascinates me to see which different memes and things take off and apread like wildfire, and which don't.

I'm not sure how well it will spread, given it's Christmas and it's not the easiest thing to do, but what the hell. Wanna do one? :)
