Ha. It's from a book. "Of Human Bondage", by W. Somerset Maugham. The little boy, Phillip, had just told his aunt that he hated her and she began to cry. He realized what he had done and then gave her a kiss in attempts to ease her pain. She formed a new appreciation for the boy because she knew he had the capacity to hurt her.
