I helped Mother pretty much finish off her Christmas shopping and we went to lunch again. We added up the family expected to mob the house Christmas day and arrived at 27 - Mother, 6 of her 7 kids (+3 spouses), 8 of the grandchildren (+3 spouses & 1 fiance), 4 great-grandchildren and a friend ( Read more... )

Actually, we're used to it and sort of have it down to a science =) And the majority of the food is being brought by my sibs and their families - my mother is only going to do one veg dish - and I'll get the dishes, silver, tables etc. ready. There's only 2 newbies this year, and the only reason there isn't 9 more is because brother #1 and his family live halfway across the country!

Years ago, when my grandmother was still alive, but living in a care home, we used to have my mother's whole side of the family over on Christmas Eve - that was a minimum of 42 aunts, uncles & cousins, plus all the cousins' spouses and kids.(My Dad's side of the family reserved the church hall for Christmas Day evening - that was more than 3 times the people than my mother's >O<.)

It's - interesting - sometimes. But I can't imagine it any other way.
