I have, perhaps surprisingly, been more or less following the US elections. Maybe it's from having been friends with politically-minded people long enough that some of it's rubbed off, heh. Or it could be because what happens there will affect what happens here on an even larger scale than usual, and in an increasingly uncertain world, I find that

I've been watching a lot of the CNN coverage in the evenings of the debates, the primaries, etc. Hubby asked me the other day why I was so interested in US politics - my answer was pretty much the same as yours. I'm not so naive as to think that Canadian politics really "matter" on the world stage, but the US presidency? Slightly different :) It does seem important, and I've always found it fascinating - even more so this time around for some of the obvious reasons.

The threat to Obama shouldn't be taken lightly, and I don't -- BUT, and this is a big but....his opponent is a woman. Trust me, in the U.S., racism and sexism are running neck and neck, so the haters aren't even sure who to hate worse.

Oh I know, I get that, but what startled me was the fear that history would repeat itself and he would be shot à la MLK, etc.. That never even occurred to me. Heckling Hilary about ironing shirts was expected but violence was not. I mean the worst thing we've done in that vein was toss a cream pie in the Prime Minister's face, which is disrespectful but hardly fatal. Assassination is just... so foreign to me and for it to be such a prevalent, real fear in this election blows my mind.
