It's funny because almost everyone our age and a little older got into the "scene" because of nirvana. Like nirvana might have opened them up to punk. Or it might have led them to listen to Nine Inch Nails, which then led them to the "goth" scene. And so on...

Almost everyone our age likes Nirvana or at least did and still has a place for them in their hearts.

A lot of people a little younger than us don't even know any of their songs other than "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and they don't even like Nirvana! Weird, haha. I wonder what was their gateway band into the scene? Marilyn Manson? Hmmmm...

yeah it's hard to explain to people who are younger what the influence of nirvana really was like, in the peak of it, before kurt died. there just aren't bands like that anymore. and it's not about how much more talented they were than other bands of the time. they were just the biggest one that caught everyone's attention, which in turn got them into other great bands. i've had a lot of people (all younger than me) tell me they don't think nirvana is that great and they just don't "get it". i don't even bother trying to explain anymore, if you weren't around my age or a little older during that time, if you didn't catch on to them at the height of their fame, there's no way you can possibly understand.

And they were basically a huge middle finger to the 80s bands. The grunge bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were pro-women's rights instead of trying to bang hundreds of groupies on tour. Back then, women weren't supposed to be with the band, they were IN the band!
Nirvana was about the music itself at a show instead of a huge light/stage show. It was about the music, not the bells and whistles.
People don't get that who are younger because the 80s are hip right now.

The grunge bands were a huge breath of fresh air. I mean, I do like me some cheesy 80s rock. But it was so oversaturated at the time, so people were sick of it.

exactly, very good points. people were so ready for a change, and nirvana is what brought it to them. i'm beginning to wonder if there will ever be such a big change in music again. we've been waiting for it for so long!
